I have been an artist my entire life. I started my professional career at the age of 22, when I was hired as the staff artist for Selling Power Magazine, thanks to Steve and Virginia Johnson, where I drew comic strips, cover art and spot illustrations for articles. One of my self help comic strips was so well received that it was featured in the Associated Press' internal newsletter.
My art career was taking off, but, I felt a desire, at the ripe age of 26 to serve my country. So, I left my job with Selling Power and joined the Army, as a combat medic. After 4 years, in 1994, I came back to art, working for The Federal Way News, in Federal Way, Washington, as their staff political cartoonist. Then FXM Inc., hired me to do two limited edition Star Trek art prints; The Battle at Wolf 359 and The Battle at Narendera III. To date, I am the only artist commissioned to capture actual battles on canvas that occurred in either the films or television programs.
In 1995, I began work as staff artist for The Octopus Magazine, in Champaign, Illinois. I did spot illustrations, cover art and also created an ongoing serialized sci-fi comic series for them called B.E.O.W.O.L.F. working with award winning sci-fi writer Steve Johnson. Steve, his wife Virginia, and I came up together at Selling Power Magazine, and honestly, they were my introduction to doing comic books, hiring me to ink a comic back in 1987.
In 1997, I left my "traditional" art career, to work for an Internet company, as their lead artist and designer. Because I was self taught in 1995, in designing websites, by 1997, I was quite adept at it. For the next 13 years I designed ad campaigns, marketing materials, websites and occasionally did art for clients. The pay was great, but, I missed drawing. Enter Tom Waltz, at IDW. In 2010, he asked me to color The A-Team: War Stories: Face. After I did that, I was hooked. I left my design career behind and returned to the world I loved; drawing comics. I formed a comic production company called Hazmat Studio, with fellow artist Amin Amat, and comic writers Matt Anderson and Eric Hutchins (writers of Ape's Kung Fu Panda and White Picket Fences). Between the end of 2010 and 2011, I have worked on Army of Two, was lead artist on Xbox's Alan Wake graphic novel, the movie tie in comic series Iron Sky, I fully illustrated Tim Kenyon's forthcoming graphic novel Endtime. I illustrated the indie comic Vanquish, in July 2011, I created, penciled and helped color IDW's best selling graphic novel Code Word: Geronimo, and am currently drawing and coloring the historical graphic novel Bayeux by Tyler Button, and another book of my own creation called Sleepers: Inception, being written by Matt and Eric and drawn by Amin and I, and the Hazmat team is also developing an action/military/vigilante comic series called Vindicated Inc..
