Comic of the Week: Feb. 28, 2012

Extras this week!

Comics Round-Up:

AVENGERS ACADEMY #26 - 3/5 - You could tell this issue was just a between arcs story. I mean, yeah, it tied into the last arc, but it's just a breather before the Runaways show up next issue. Which I am super excited for!

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #6 - 3/5 - I know this series has issues, but I still have hope. I'm not gonna drop it just yet because I think things are gonna turn around pretty soon. Also, I kinda want to know more about White Rabbit....

DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #6 - 4/5 - This was one of my new pick ups, the story seemed interesting and I decided to try it out. Pretty cool so far, can't wait to see more!

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #6 - 4/5 - This is my second favorite Green Lantern book. Green Lantern is the first, obviously, but this one is amazing as well. I love seeing so much of the other Lanterns and the story is getting really interesting.

THIEF OF THIEVES #1 - 3/5 - Second of my new tries, this series seems really interesting and, although the first issue isn't much, I'm super excited to read more of it.

VENOM #13 - 4/5 - The only reason I'm picking this up is because of X-23. The folks at my shop said it's pretty good and, if the first issue indicates, it seems to be. Catching up on this tomorrow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Comic of the Week:

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN #6 - 5/5 - I can say it enough, this series is so much fun to read! I guess it really helps that I love Kitty Pryde and Iceman, because they are getting quite a bit of attention. Especially Kitty, but not the attention she wants. Also, if you haven't been reading the characters' Twitter accounts, you really should be.

Comic of the Week: Feb. 21, 2012

To the books!

Comics Round-Up:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #679.1 - 3/5 - I really don't get these "Point One" issues. I don't really care, I understand who Spider-Man is, I figured out where he worked from the first issue of it I picked up (#677) and I really don't need to be helped into this storyline. Either way, it was nice to see more Spidey I guess. #680 will be better though.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #4 - 3/5 - I already miss Joe Mad's art. It's a shame he was on for such a short time but it was more of a treat, I guess. The new art isn't bad, though. This issue was just ok. I didn't hate it, but didn't find it mind-blowing either.

CATWOMAN #6 - 4/5 - I love me some Catwoman! This issue was a great read from her being interrogated, to her breaking out (spoilers?), to her interaction with the Bats. Can't wait to see how long it takes for Bruce to come back to the honeypot. (no pun intended)

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #6 - 4/5 - The end of this arc is what I wanted this series to be, now to see if it stays there.

HUNTRESS #5 - 4/5 - Huntress was kicking all sorts of ass in here! As much as I love Helena, I just want this to end. I would have been fine with it ending on this issue but I'm fine with another issue if it's as action-packed as this one.

PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE #5 - 5/5 - An amazing conclusion to an amazing mini-series! Can't say much more than that you must read this series, amazing all-around!

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #6 - 4/5 - Starfire and Jason origin here. Loved it! Everyone who gives this series crap for issue #1 and Starfire's appearance needs to shut up already. This is a great series, if you're not reading it, it's your loss.

UNCANNY X-MEN #7 - 4/5 - Fun issue to an interesting story arc. Like I said last issue, Magneto and Psylocke are my favorites, and they deliver in here, albeit very little.

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN: ALPHA & OMEGA #2 - 4/5 - This series just seems pure enjoyable and I'm excited for the rest of it. Quentin is such a jerk, that I can't help but enjoy reading about him!

Comic of the Week:

BATMAN #6 - 5/5 - Scott Snyder, if you could write Batman for the rest of your life, that would be awesome. Everything you have done in this series is amazing! The Court of Owls conclusion (kinda) is no exception. Bats came back from death basically and kicked some owl tail! Really great writing and the art helps that a lot! Can't wait for #7 and the Night of the Owls event after that!

Comic of the Week: Feb. 14, 2012

So, although I teased this getting posted early this week on my Twitter, it's not. In fact, it's a bit late. Valentine's Day is to blame. I don't care much for the holiday but any reason to hang out with my girlfriend more and treat her like a princess (while I still enjoy doing so) is fine by me. Here's comics!

Comics Round-Up:

ADVENTURE TIME #1 - 5/5 - This is an amazing comic, no matter what you say about me liking one of the few cartoons I'm jealous of kids about. This is just what I hoped for and, after reading it, I immediately added it to my pull list.

BATGIRL #6 - 4/5 - This is quite an interesting story that is unfolding. The Bruce/Babs fight was slightly predictable, but the rest was good fun!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #6 - 4/5 - Damian is getting pretty badass in this series. Here I thought, he was betraying Bruce and then a big old switch-a-roo happened and, I gotta say, I loved it!

BATWOMAN #6 - 4/5 - I'm really surprised at how awesome this series is. It's funny because this was a last-minute addition to my pull list when the New 52 started. I didn't even plan on buying this series but I don't regret it one bit. The art, if nothing else, makes this series but the story has been just as good. Incredible series!

GREEN LANTERN #6 - 4/5 - This issue made me super excited for the upcoming story arc. It's cool to see Hal ready to quit the ring altogether but then Sinestro (my favorite character in the GL universe) put the stop to that and things are heating up!

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN #5 - 4/5 - I love this series. That is all, really. Oh, and I love Iceman. So now that's all.

Comic of the Week:

SUICIDE SQUAD #6 - 5/5 - Say what you will about this issue, but I am a big Harley Quinn fan and this arc has been something I've been excited for for a while. It's really nice to see her origin/Joker love in this issue as well.

Comic of the Week: Feb. 7, 2012

Back again with another round-up of my comics!

Comics Round-Up:

AVENGERS ACADEMY #25 - 3/5 - This issue was entertaining, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't mind-blowing or anything. I enjoy this series and I'm interested in the Runaways showing up in a couple issues, but I'm more interested in the X-23 finally getting some action since she's the reason I'm reading this now.

BATWING #6 - 4/5 - This series is full of so much greatness! The story is great and I'm excited for the next arc, but the art is really what makes this series. I'm disappointed to see that Ben Oliver won't be on this series much longer but I love Dustin Nguyen as well. We'll see I guess.

DETECTIVE COMICS #6 - 3/5 - The past 2 issues in this series have been kinda not so great. That being said, the end of this issue looks like things will finally be going somewhere. So next month will be the time for me to get back on board with this series or see that it's dying off.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #6 - 4/5 - Many people may have overlooked this series since it's basically the B-Team to the Justice League, but I really, really like this series. This issue got me really excited to see the next story arc come about and see the interactions between the members of the team. It's just a fun book!

RED LANTERNS #6 - 3/5 - I love Red Lanterns, and I love that there is finally the human Lantern that has been teased since issue 1, but his debut was lackluster. That said, there were some good parts and then ending makes me excited for the next issue. Not worried about this series yet.

UNCANNY X-MEN #6 - 4/5 - Ok, this series is great for two reasons: Magneto and Psylocke. I'm not a Cyclops fan and I'm only reading this to see the main books of the two sides of the Schism. Magneto and Psylocke in this issue were very entertaining though and I can't wait for more.

Comic of the Week:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #679 - 5/5 - I love Spider-Man! I'm a DC fan and not a big Marvel fan, but I've always had a soft spot for the web-slinger. Part 1 of this arc was amazing and the conclusion was just as good, if not better. It was an enjoyable read and I'm happy I get a double dose of Spidey every month.

Comic of the Week: Jan. 31, 2012

Pretty boring week in terms of comics, as my fourth week of the month usually is. Only 3 titles this week. So.....GO!

Comics Round-Up:

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #5 - 4/5 - This issue was pretty good for the sole purpose of Scarecrow. Scarecrow is one of my favorite characters and an issue focusing on him made me super happy. Superman, not a favorite of mine, actually made me happy as well to see. It showed that the Justice League sticks by their members and Supes was ready to save the Bat. Too bad things didn't work out as planned and the cliffhanger was quite fun.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 - 4/5 - This issue.... I liked the part with Bats showing Hal who he really is although the ripping off of the Bat-symbol was highly unnecessary and dumb. Even with Geoff Johns' interview on the site here, it still seems stupid. We'll see though. I liked how Batman just took off to get Superman though, especially after what I read in the Dark Knight. It was unrelated, of course, but funny.

Comic of the Week:

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #5
- 4/5 - I love this series. There, I said it. This is probably my second favorite GL series right now. I love Kyle's quest to "unite" the different Lantern Corps. I really just like seeing all the different Lanterns and I'm hoping this is an on-going thing and not just a part of this story arc. There were many tiny moments in this issue that made me super excited for next month. Now to just make it there....

Cover of the Week:

None of them were that impressive, I must say.

Comic of the Week: Jan. 24, 2012

I'm back again for an interesting week of comics!

Comics Round-Up:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #678 - 5/5 - Quite an amazing issue really. I like the whole time travel thing and I'm interested in the next issue. I haven't read anything Spidey-related until recently so it's kind of nice seeing things I didn't really expect when I picked up a Spidey book. Really fun read!

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #3 - 4/5 - Sad to see this was Joe Mad's last issue on this series because the art was my favorite thing about this series. The story is amazing however and I'm loving the team-up feel to it. The first arc has wrapped up with Red Hulk and next issue we get to see Hawkeye. Can't wait!

BIRDS OF PREY #5 - 2/5 - I think I have made my decision on what series I'll be dropping come May when Batman Incorporated comes out. This is the one. This issue confused me so much due to not remembering what happened last issue. That's bad. Even with all the issues I read every month, I should be able to remember what happened last issue in your series even if it takes me a page or two into the next issue. Couldn't remember a thing with this one. I thought Batgirl being in it would help me, but I think this is doomed. I'll continue to read until I have something to replace it, but it's looking grim.

CATWOMAN #5 - 3/5 - Catwoman is very unlucky. I still like this series although the past 2 or 3 issues haven't been what I wanted. I want the Batman relationship to at least be hinted at in the issues. I get that she has her own problems, but she still needs her Bat to snuggle up to, right? Consider me old-fashioned, but I like my bat-on-cat action.

DAREDEVIL #8 - 4/5 - I only bought this to get part 2 of the last Amazing Spider-Man issue. Not a big Daredevil fan but I liked this issue. If you like Daredevil, you might be intrigued by the ending.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #5 - 4/5 - Finally! This series has finally become what I wanted! I was seriously considering this to be the series I would drop but things got interesting again. It's probably because Guy finally found some guys that are interesting and make the team worth caring about.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #5 - 4/5 - This is another issue that has finally hit my expectations. By the end of this issue, I feel this series is headed in the direction I hoped it would from the beginning. Then again, who doesn't love Jason Todd? I mean, besides The Joker.

UNCANNY X-MEN #5 - 3/5 - I don't fully understand why I pick up this series. I hate Cyclops and I'm a huge Wolverine fan. I think I might be buying this just so I can see the "full" picture of the Schism. Then again, Magneto was pretty cool in this issue. So maybe it's because of him.

Comic of the Week:

BATMAN #5 - 5/5 - This issue! Wow! So much to say about it! The art, the story, the everything about it! It's all great! On a serious note, this is one of my favorite New 52 series. The story here is getting so addicting and it makes me wish I could get the next issue instantly every time I read it. The Court of Owls event is coming up and this is leading right into it. There were also cool ways of reading the issue that have a lot to do with what is going on in the story. If you like anything about Batman, you should be reading this series.

Cover of the Week:

Amazing Spider-Man #678
Amazing Spider-Man #678

Really like the layout of this cover. I'm really into good composition so this made me happy. The rain looks a bit to thick but that's minor.

-Green Lantern: New Guardians #5

Comic of the Week: Jan. 17, 2012

I'm late, I guess? I haven't really stuck to a time for these but I feel Tuesday is too late. New comics come out tomorrow! Oh well, time to do this.

Comics Round-Up:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #677 - 3/5 - In my defense, this is the first issue of the series I've picked up in a while. I decided, after reading Avenging Spider-Man, I need more Spidey. New issue comes out this week (weird) so I'll get more pretty soon.

AVENGERS ACADEMEY #24 - 3/5 - This came out a week before but I just got it due to my shop's low order of them. I came to this series for X-23. I was worried I wouldn't be happy with what I got. If the end of this issue is any indication, I should be happy. We'll see though.

BATGIRL #5 - 3/5 - I'm really happy a new story arc is starting and super excited to see more of it. The biggest I problem I had was the art. Not all of it was bad, but the diner scenes were kinda bad because Babs' mom looked like an older version of her, which probably makes sense, but Babs herself looked too old. This is a minor thing probably but it really bothered me. Can't wait for more of this arc though!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #5 - 4/5 - I love this series. Damian is my favorite Robin and seeing him run around with Bruce is great. Until now. Damian has run away and what exactly will he get himself wrapped up in? Can't wait to find out!

BATWOMAN #5 -4/5 -THE ART! Every single issue makes me want to just sit and stare at every panel. It takes me so much longer to read these issues because I get wrapped up in the art and forget where I was in the story. Love this series!

SUICIDE SQUAD #5 - 4/5 - This series is just pure fun. The story is interesting, but I find I come back every month to see what craziness the characters get themselves into. The end of this issue sets up a story I can't wait to see!

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #4 - 4/5 - Loved to see just simple "normal" days at the school. The art threw me off. A lot. I didn't hate it, but it was different and somewhat weird. Mainly, Iceman. I love Iceman because of this series and he looked too weird in it. I liked the look he had in the first 3 issues but this one, not so much.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN: ALPHA & OMEGA #1 - 4/5 - This is an interesting series. I wasn't sure if I wanted to pick it up because it's typical Marvel making a ton of series that are unnecessary and just try to get more money out of you. Turns out this one isn't so bad. It focuses on Quentin Quire, someone I definitely want to know more about, so I'm excited to see more of it.

Comic of the Week:

GREEN LANTERN #5 - 5/5 - I can't believe how this series continues to be my favorite of the New 52! It just keeps coming! The art is great but the story is really what has me on board with this. Sinestro is one of my favorite characters and this series focuses on him so heavily that I love coming back to it every month.

Cover of the Week:

BATWOMAN #5
BATWOMAN #5

Like I said, the art in this series is amazing and this cover is great proof of that.

Comic of the Week: Jan. 9, 2012

I'm still trying to perfect this formula so bear with me. I've decided what I'm going to do now is do a round-up of the issues I picked up last week and then post a quick thing of what I thought about them and then show the one I liked the most along with my favorite cover of the week. And we're off!

Comics Round-Up:

BATMAN: DETECTIVE COMICS #5 - 2/5 - Was pretty awful, to be honest. The story sucked and the "back-up" at the end made no sense. Art was really good though.

BATWING #5 - 3/5 - Story is slowly coming to an end and it's about time. This story is tired and I can't wait for it to end. The art, as always, looks great!

HUNTRESS #4 - 3/5 - This story also needs to end. We still have 2 issues and I feel like the next should be the last. The way they went about this story is so jumbled that the sooner it ends the better. It's a shame too, cause Huntress is such a cool character.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #5 - 3/5 - Paraxxus is gone? That arc is done I guess, but he will return. He promised.

RED LANTERNS #5 - 4/5 - This series. I was worried it was gonna start feeling dragged out but this issue made me think that it's finally ready. The Red Lanterns are ready to take their rage out on everyone and they have a new member. How will Hal feel about this new member? More importantly, when will they meet?

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 - 3/5 - This issue was slightly confusing. It was a one-shot showing the history of the Phalanx, which was interesting, but then when it takes on the X-Men, he gets taken out pretty quickly. Either way, the next issue will be nice to see something new. I also enjoyed how Sinister was in this as well. I feel he will be a constant in this series.

Comic of the Week:

PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE #4 - 5/5 - This series is getting better and better. On top of the amazing art, the story makes you feel bad for Penguin. At least, it did. At the end of this issue, you'll start to hate him again.

Favorite Cover of the Week:

Batwing #5
Batwing #5

Next Week's Comics:

-Batgirl #5

-Batman and Robin #5

-Batwoman #5

-Green Lantern #5

-Suicide Squad #5

-Avenging Spider-Man #3

-Wolverine and the X-Men #4

-Avengers Academy #24 (shop didn't get enough copies last week)

And this is my current format. What do you think?

Comic of the Week x2: Dec. 29, 2011

Due to Christmas things last week, I missed the date I thought I would post this on. Due to only picking up 3 issues this week (it's my slow week of the month), I decided to combine last week and this week into one post. So without further ado, let's do this!

I will try to avoid spoilers this time, but just in case, read with caution.

Comic of the Week - Dec. 21:

Wolverine and the X-Men #3
Wolverine and the X-Men #3

I'm going to say this up front, I'm not a big Marvel fan. I lean heavily towards DC, especially Batman and Green Lantern. That being said, there are a few Marvel titles on my pull list. Wolverine and the X-Men is one of them. I originally started picking it up because the idea of Logan being in Xavier's shoes (I know, he's in a wheelchair) was very interesting to me. He seems like the absolute worst choice to run the school and that's why this series is so great. The first two issues showed that he is the worst, the third? This showed that maybe he can pull it off. But just barely.

Issue 1 had the safety inspectors ripping apart the school right as the attack from the Hellfire Club begins. This is the first time you see Krakoa in this series. Kade Kilgore sends him to truly break the ground on the new school. Issue 2 you see how the students and faculty react to getting attacked and I personally decided Iceman is my favorite character in the series because of it, but that is a story for another time.

The current issue shows how the group resolves the Hellfire situation and it's as awesome as it is funny. The issue also focuses on Quentin Quire, how he got there, and what exactly he wants to do there. Since I want to avoid spoilers, I won't say what exactly it is, but there is a good interaction with Krakoa that is definitely going to affect things down the road in this series. I think it will be for the better, but we'll see. At the end, there is a good reveal of who and what the next threat will be for Wolverine and the school and I'm pretty excited.

Overall, the story is something I enjoy coming to every issue and that is something that is very rare for me with Marvel titles. The intro had a nice backstory for Kid Omega that I enjoyed reading since I don't know a whole lot about what's going on in the Marvel-verse. The story is complimented by the amazing art, as well. The covers haven't been that great, in my opinion, but inside the issue the panels look amazing. These issues are quality reading that I love finding in my bag every couple weeks. Can't wait for issue 4!

Rating: 5/5 - I know, another 5/5. But this issue was really good and I enjoyed it a lot. Art and story were amazing!

Comic of the Week - Dec. 28:

Green Lantern New Guardians #4

This week it was tough to pick my favorite comic. To be completely honest, none of them were all that amazing. Granted, the last of the week of the month is my slow week, but I still was expected one of these to be amazing. Most of all, this issue. It was good, but not great. The thing I enjoy the most about New Guardians, is showing off all the other Lantern Corps. Kyle Rayner has somehow attracted all the other Corps' rings and we are finally starting to really figure out what's going on. Larfleeze is the focus in this issue with his greedy ways. The old Guardians are none to happy about this sudden "friendship" of all the Corps and, possibly, rightly so. Ganthet tries to talk to Rayner and make him think that there way is the right way. Let's just say, that doesn't go over too well and the Laterns are forced to retreat. Arkillo and Bleez are obviously not very happy about that.

There is a cool interaction between Saint Walker and Arkillo as well that I won't spoil. As well as a reveal of the Lanterns' next adventure at the end of the issue. I'm very interested to see what these "rogue" Lanterns end up doing and when/how the old Guardians catch up to them.

Rating: 4/5 - This issue was very exciting but didn't meet my high expectations. The art is still very good and the covers are very nice as well. The story is exciting to read but may need to speed up on the new adventures which the next issue seems to have. I'm excited to follow all these Lanterns around and see them slowly start to unite in their cause.

That's all I got this week. I will be on time next week so look out for that. Issues I'm picking up next week:

-Batwing #5

-Detective Comics #5

-Huntress #4

-Justice League International #5

-Penguin: Pain and Prejudice #4

-Red Lanterns #5

-Avengers Academy #24

See you next week!

Comic of the Week: December 20th, 2011

I've decided to finally start doing a blog feature on Comic Vine. Every Saturday, except for this week, I will pick my favorite issue of the week. Post it on here, talk about it a bit, and maybe say some more stuff. Let me know what you guys think about this and suggestions would be welcome as well. So let's get to it, shall we?

Also, spoilers WILL follow below so be careful.

My comic of the week this week is.....

Green Lantern #4 - Sinestro, Part Four
Green Lantern #4 - Sinestro, Part Four
Hal's lost a lot of weight since losing his ring!
Hal's lost a lot of weight since losing his ring!

This is more than my Comic of the Week, this was my most-anticipated issue of the month. After being left wondering just what the hell happened to Hal Jordan last month, I could not wait to get my hands on this one. I was fully prepared to just accept that Hal died and the series would continue on with Sinestro as the main Green Lantern and being all about the will instead of the fear. Obviously that wasn't going to happen but when Hal disintegrates before your eyes at the end of issue 3, what else will your mind jump to?

The explanation behind Hal's "destruction" was kind of annoying in only the fact that he came back basically because he wasn't Sinestro. Does this mean Korugar's power battery was designed to destroy Sinestro assuming he would fly in to it? Sinestro must have known this due to the fact he sent Hal in there in the first place, but then why was he so worried Hal was actually gone?

Sinestro must have really bumped up his conjuring skill!
Sinestro must have really bumped up his conjuring skill!

After the chaos that happened with the battery, Hal and Sinestro are captured by the Sinestro Corps. Hal is put into a "decharging cell" where he is forced to use his power ring, because he obviously can't just sit there and do nothing, and it runs out of juice. So he's screwed. As for Sinestro, they want to cut his hand off so things are going great for him too. Sinestro gets the same treatment as Hal only his cell has some guests. He finds the people of Korugar are none too happy about him leaving them and they won't let him escape the planet alive.

Hal gives Sinestro an awesome idea to make a ton of power rings like he did with for him and give the rings to all the angry people in the cell. Great idea, right? Sinestro does, because apparently the cell drains your intelligence as well, and guess what happens? Let's just say it will be interesting to see how Sinestro gets himself out of this one, or will he simply just turn off their rings?

Rating:

5/5 - Really, really enjoyed this issue and can't wait for issue #5!

Please leave your comments about what you liked about this, what you didn't, whether you agree, disagree, or anything you want about this. I will start posting on the correct day on Saturday. Here's a hint about what my most-anticipated issue is this week: He's the darkest of the knights.
