1) Wolverine - Arguably Marvel's best fighter, just a bit better than Spider-Man.
2) Cyclops - Great fighter, even better tactician. The X-Men are a team and he understands team dynamics better than any of the others. He has a limited ability, yet he's been able to more than get by over the years.
3) Storm - Street smarts and powers make her deadly. Like Cyclops, she understands team dynamics and was as good a leader, too.
4) Nightcrawler - Ever see him take on both Colossus and Rogue and not break a sweat? Kurt has also tested Spider-Man back in the day. He's as close as the X-Men got to being everywhere at once on the battlefield.  The X2 opening sequence was an accurate depiction of Kurt.
5) Psylocke - Ninja telepath for the win. Heck, even before she was a ninja she took on Sabertooth by herself. Knowing your enemy's moves almost before they do is quite an advantage, and she knows how to use it.
6) Rogue - A bruiser with a lethal kiss. She reminds me of Wolverine sometimes - she gets nastier the more you knock her around.
7) Gambit - A combination of Storm (street smarts) and Nightcrawler (fantastic agility), but not quite as good as the originals.
8) Colossus - His armored form makes him as endurable as Wolverine, if not quite as lethal.
9) Shadowcat - She's intelligent and she's been mentored extesively by Wolverine and Storm on how to tussle.  Kitty is a deceptively cunning combatant.
10) The Beast - Super strenghth, super agility, and super intelligence. Great one liners.

@kd005:
Yes! Buy old issues - or, if you can't afford those, go for "Classic X-Men" a series of high-quality reprints (of Uncanny X-Men) that started with the All-New, All-Different team. The art is top notch and the stories are timeless. Here are a few choices:

Classic X-Men #1

(reprint of the Giant Size Uncanny X-Men) - Introduced Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Thunderbird to the Academy and forever changed comics. The story made history, even if it is bit dated.

Classic X-Men #16

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #109) - The Canadian government sends Vindicator to come and collect Wolverine and ends up getting a little more than he bargained for when Storm, Banshee, and Colossus join the fray.

Classic X-Men #17

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #110) - Mesmero has hypnotized the X-Men, making them circus acts and sideshow freaks against their will. Taking a break from the Avengers, it's up to the Beast to come to the rescue.

Classic X-Men #18

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #111) - Magneto comes along to once again kick the snot outta the X-Men (only the second time the new guys will have fought him). He trashes them (again) and enslaves them in Antarctica.

Classic X-Men #19

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #112) - Storm uses her theiving abilities to help free her teammates setting up one of the best X-Men vs. Magneto battles you will ever read. Wolvie has a breakdown in this issue.

Classic X-Men #26-27

(UXM #120 & #121) - The Canadian government tries a second time to get Wolverine back, and this time sends Alpha Flight (Northstar, Aurora, Vindicator, Sasquatch, Snow Bird, and Shaman) to fight the X-Men.

Classic X-Men #32-34

(UXM #126-128) - The X-Men take on Proteus, a reality-warping super baddie that really tests the limits of what the team can do. The X-Men are shaken and Cyclops has to wake them up!

Classic X-Men #35-43

(The Dark Phoenix Saga) - Epic, iconic, history-making story. Introduces Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, Dazzler, The Hellfire Club. Fantastic battles: X-Men vs. The Hellfire Club and X-men vs. The Shi'ar Imperial Guard (Gladiator, Manta, Mentor, Starbolt, Earthquake, etc.) . Don't be ashamed to cry at the end.

Classic X-Men #45-46

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #139&140) - Wolverine and Nightcrawler head to Canada to take care of business. The savage Wendigo comes along, and it's up to Logan, Kurt, Snowbird and Guardian (both from Alpha Flight) to take him down.

Classic X-Men #47

(reprint of Uncanny X-Men #141) - 14 year old Kitty Pryde has joined the X-Men and, by herself at the X-Mansion on Christmas Eve, she must take on an ancient demon that's looking for a meal.

All the stories in between are solid, but the ones above stand out as great reads that I think even today's collectors would enjoy. The art is top-notch and the storylines are even better. Treat yourself to an early Christmas gift and stary buying. This run in the serie made the X-Men the icons they are today - I don't think you'll be dissapointed. Be sure to look up several of the issues I mention above in Comic Vine's database to see the awesome cover art by Art Adams.

Bleedingheart misquoted me - Nightcrawler should have been at 17 (now 18) so I fixed the mistake.
