Early Review/Preview NYX: No Way Home #2

NYX: No Way Home #2

Things Don't Look Good For the Gang

Thanks to Marvel I got an early look at NYX #2.  I can't really pinpoint what it is about the characters in NYX that I like.  They're not your typical comic book kids.  They're living on the streets but their lives seem less comfortable than the kids from the Runaways.  They're not out to try to change the world or even try to save it.  They just want to save themselves.  Their survival is their main priority.  That's not saying that they are selfish in any way.  Last issue they discovered that their former teacher that has helped them in the past is missing, they want to try save her.

Given the situation that they're in, it's not going to be easy.  We see that there is someone working behind the scenes.  Someone that has targeted the kids.  They now find themselves with nothing.  What little semblance of a life they had has been taken away.  They truly are without anything right now.

Marjorie Liu is doing a great job in making me care and sympathize for these kids.  You can't help but root for them.  Their life was hard before and it seems it's going to get a lot harder.  Despite the lack of cheerfulness, I can't help but enjoy and admire the comic.  The characters are in their own little dark world.  They won't be getting help from the X-Men or other heroes.  There's no Secret Invasion to worry about.  When reading this issue, you don't have to worry about other things.  I think that's why it's so easy to get sucked into their lives.  The ending leaves you hanging and wanting more.  The included sketches by Kalman Andrasofszky are pretty cool to see too.  A nice added bonus.

I give this issue a 4.5 out of 5.  Here's the preview:

NYX: No Way Home #2

Kiden, Tatiana, Bobby Soul, and Lil' Bro never had an easy life. But when someone kidnaps their would-be mentor--the only person who ever lifted a finger on their behalf--this is when the NYX learn what they're really made of. Will they stand together --or fall apart? All this, plus a special section of behind-the-scenes bonus material and never-before-seen art!
