Early Review/Preview for Ron Marz's Dragon Prince

Dragon Prince #1 (Cover A)

A Solid First Issue

Whenever I see a new comic series I always ask, do we need another new character?  What is refreshing about Ron Marz's Dragon Prince is we're all on board at the beginning.  It's nice to be able to read a comic and not have to worry about years of history and continuity.  We are introduced to Aaron Chiang.  He's your typical teenager until he discovers his destiny.  Think young Peter Parker but with a dragon instead of a spider.

I read the comic before looking at any of the preview images.  At first I thought it was all going to be set in the past.  Marz managed to avoid the easy route and mix things up.  At the end of the issue, you're not really sure what direction the story will go.  That's great.  I don't want a predictible story.  Sure I have some ideas on how things could play out but knowing Marz's writing style, there's always a surprise around the corner.

Lee Moder's art was pretty good.  I do have to say that at times it seemed a tiny bit inconsistent.  Perhaps as he gets a feel for the different characters this won't be an issue for me.

I'm not normally a fan of dragon-based stories but I am interested to see where this goes.  4 out of 5.

Here's the preview:

(W) Ron Marz
(A) Lee Moder
(Cov) Jeff Johnson, Stjepan Sejic

Writer Ron Marz has revitalized Witchblade and is the architect behind the acclaimed First Born and Broken Trinity crossover events. Now, joined by artist Lee Moder (First Born: Aftermath, Painkiller Jane), Marz debuts DRAGON PRINCE, a four-part modern fantasy with equal doses of magic and martial arts mayhem.

Like a lot of teenagers, Aaron Chiang feels he’s never fit in, though he’s never known why. But all that changes when he learns the truth of his heritage: He is the Dragon Prince, last of his kind and heir to the bloodline of all dragons. Hunted to the brink of extinction by a secret society of wizards, dragonkind’s survival is now in Aaron’s hands.
