Fanservice at your Service

So, I check io9 fairly regularly and I saw this today. A 1990s era Marvel Superheroes SWIMSUIT SPECIAL!
It's a great reminder of how the characters looked when I started reading comics in the 90s, sure some of the art is Liefeldian, and the fashion is dated, but it's nostalgic for me a little bit, and it's a pretty even mix of fan-service for the guys AND gals. Sure it's exploitative, but its EQUALLY exploitative and its not creepy.

There's a Namor pic that is even more scanitly clad than normal (you're welcome Babs).

Now for something COMPLETELY light

In case you didn't see, Bruce Timm's design of Conan O'Brien as a superhero, see the link in my blog, yonder. Anyway, It turns out the animators over at DC animation had some free time, and the pilot of Young Justice was missing a certain rugged feistiness that bearded Aquaman just wasn't pulling off. So the Flaming C has officially made his debut in the DC animated universe. See link below

You're welcome. But I'm kinda sad there's no love for Zatara on Team CoCo

Tuscon comics retailer OFFICIALLY worst person in America

Ok, well worst SANE person in America. Some of you may have seen this on Bleeding Cool or Comics Alliance, but I'll chime in about my thoughts here, because I love the sound of my own voice, or the digital equivalent. Although I try to be light on swearing on a site that has kids of all ages, I might slip due to the terrible nature of this story, I apologize in advance to anyone whose sensibilities I offend, or to the mods if swearing is a rule violation. I will gladly edit this entry later if that is the case to remove some of my more colorful language, but right now, it's just a rant.

In light of the tragedy that was local to his area, the president of online comic retailer Heavy Ink (which I won't link to because as will become apparent, f%&* that guy) decided to tweet that all elected members of Congress should be assassinated. In what some trolls might call "fairness" the guy did say that it's " unacceptable to shoot 'indiscriminately'" but also said that all politicians AND their staff was fair game, as if politicians and their staffers aren't "regular people," like they don't have parents, or spouses, or children, or friends who would miss them; whose hearts would be torn asunder and whose lives would never be the same.

This guy disgusts me. The chances that this guy was "using satire" or "being ironic" are slim to nil. If you think he's being ironic, you don't understand what irony is (see Futurama episode   4ACV18 "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings"). I'm all for shock humor, but there's a statute of limitations regarding when things become funny. Maybe it's because I live in a city where I know a lot of government employees and many of my friends in college interned for local Congressmen or the White House. But as bat-sh!t crazy as I think those people with different ideas from me are; and as bone-headedly stupid they sound on their tv shows shouting at the world to fear and hate the other side; and as fun as it is to use hyperbole and say that Michelle Bachman or Nancy Pelosi should be dragged into the middle of the street and run over with a bus emblazoned with the words "common sense ideas" because they STILL wouldn't know what one was… I wouldn't actually want them to die. I mean for f&^$'s sake, if nothing else, it makes us look like assholes internationally. We go around talking about the stability of American Democracy and then this sh!t makes us look like @$$holes.

One or more or fewer God(s) bless all the comics creators for commenting on what a waste of stem cell research this guy is. In a system where the publisher takes orders from retailers, it's nice to see that the creators are at least asking that this retailer not get access to their products.

Hopefully he will go out of business, his family/friends will leave him, he'll sink into a deep depression and shoot himself, because he's not "regular people" he's a GIANT F*^$#ing @$$HOLE and the world would be better off if he were never born!

But not really, that's just hyperbole, and if that giant loser f*#$kwit were dead, I'd like to think that someone would miss him (even if it's just his parents, in whose basement he most likely lives)

Wait... WHAT?!

So y'all remember the issue of Batman Inc. where both Batmen were in Paris, and they introduced Nightrunner? At the end of the issue they had a second feature about his backstory (Parisian muslim whose friend was killed uses parkour, or free-running, to… ummm… run and… jump and… did I say run already? Wait, what DOES he do anyway?!). Well it turns out crazy bloggers on the internet have a problem with this. You can read more about it here. Here too. Maybe I think this is asinine because I'm a crazy left wing pinko (except that I'm not), maybe its because I hate America (not that either), or want the terrorists to "win" (wrong again). Maybe I'm a secret Muslim like the president (neither of those are true, and if he was Muslim why do people get so mad about his former priest?)

Alas, the real reason this story upsets me is twofold: One blogger states that he thinks the book will "CONFUSE" people about "what's really going on." Like he thinks comic readers will believe that there actually IS a Batman Incorporated? I mean who could forget that all comic book readers ACTUALLY thought there was a year when the VERY REAL PEOPLE Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman went missing after the ALSO NOT FAKE AT ALL Infinite Crisis?! Oh… that's not what he meant by "confused about what's really going on," Well that makes me even more upset. As racist or xenophobic or whatever you want to call it, as many of those comments are, the racists/xenophobes are ignoring the fact that it's obviously a world of make believe.

When it gets down to brass tacks, the racism isn't even the part I have the big problem with. I can read a racist statement and be like "oh well they're racist, I don't need to listen to them." What really grinds my gears is when they try to make it sound like they actually relate to the people they THINK are being "deceived" by a comic book. If they think an Algerian muslim Parisian superhero doesn't jibe with their view of reality, all they have to do is be dismissive and racist and it wouldn't come off as so underhandedly asshole-ish. Just say "oh, a muslim who is a good guy, that's how you know it's a fantasy world," and be an obvious racist asshole and be done with it.

And then there's the fact that some people write their opinions down on a web-based internet page and expect other people to CARE about them. I mean,. "blogs" come on. What kind of self-rightous, opinionated jerk thinks other people would want to read their opinions?!

The Blarghing Continues

http://gammasquad.uproxx.com/2010/12/conan-show-redesigns-dcs-superheroines
Conan O'Brien was turned into a DC Comics character (The Flaming C) by Bruce Timm.
Now Conan's staff has redesigned DC heroines. It is still hilarious.

That is all.
