5 All-Time Favorite Comicbook Series

List items

  • Mignola's macabre folklore masterpiece. With unique illustrations and an inventive mythology built on real-life urban myths and legends, Hellboy was destined to make its mark. It's been 20 years since Hellboy crashed onto the scene and, my, what a run its been. Since then Hellboy has become one of the most famous creations in comics outside of the Big 2, and for good reason.

The only "problem" with Hellboy is it absolutely needs Mignola at the helm. The book suffers without his presence. I can hardly think of any other character who is so tied to one creator that no one else can quite do him proper justice. This poses a problem because there will come a day when Mignola can't or won't make these comics anymore. Until then, I intend to enjoy the ride.

  • Like Hellboy, Invincible is ostensibly tied to Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley. The upsides for these types of long-term ongoing relationships are limitless. The downsides are something I just don't want to fathom.

Here's a comic that's been riveting since issue 1. It may have started out a bit slow, but the book has improved with every story arc, to the point that this series is now an undeniable classic.

  • Hal Jordan. Thaal Sinestro. Will power. Fear. Space cops. Power rings. Goofy green tights. Little blue aliens.

This is the Green Lantern Corps. We don't got room for any of that Alan Scott sh*%.

  • Robert Venditti and Cary Nord took a classic story of Conan-style barbarian meets high-tech alien sci-fi and improved upon it. This modern retelling of the X-O Manowar mythology has been absolutely enjoyable. I can't get enough of a certain Visigoth barbarian, Aric of Dacia, in control of the world's greatest weapon - the X-O Manowar armor.

  • Dysart's character driven series is exemplary work. He takes flawed, human characters and makes us love them. Even the ones who do horrendous things have redeeming qualities.

The characters are what make Harbinger the series it is. Truly becoming one of the great runs in comicbooks, Dysart's work on Harbinger continues to improve and impress.
