If marvel did do a reboot of the 616 continuity they still would have axed the marriage, Quesada seemed determined to do so, but then the ultimate universe could be considered Marvel's remake.
I keep hearing the argument that OMD was necessary since Peter revealed his identity. The one and only reason OMD happened was to undo the marriage, that’ it. The power that be at Marvel would never have done a story where he revealed his identity or had Aunt May get shot if they weren’t planning to have Mephisto magic it all away. It was lazy, cheap and gutless.
The thing about OMD is that it’s still with us today, sinking up the joint 4-plus years later. Other bad stories eventually end and you can get on telling better stories but as good as the writing on ASM might be now there is always the reminder of OMD and what a piece of crap it was. Not only seeing Pete and MJ apart, or that Aunt May has forgotten Peter is Spider-Man but you always have to try to keep straight what may or may not have happened. Some comments on this story seem to think that OMD erased the Sins Past story (it didn’t). Did Pete and MJ have a baby that died? (Who knows)
So whats the deal with the Red She-Hulk? At the end of the “Heart of the Monster” story arc in Incredible Hulks, Betty seemed to be in control of her transformations, and no more crazy Red She-Hulk. That seemed to hold true in Fear Itself and her brief appearance in the new Incredible Hulk series. But in Hulk #47, crazy Red She-Hulk is back as if Betty and Red were two separate personalities, and in Defenders #2 she’s not crazy, Betty is in control, but she can’t power down unless somethings scares her?
I know it’s impossible to be 100% consistent over all the titles the Marvel produces, but Red She-Hulk seems all over the map.
This question is moot as far as I'm concerned. One More Day just taints everything that followed so any questions about his relationships with Mary Jane or Carlie Cooper inevitably leads back to OMD and what a piece of crap THAT was.
But of course they’re going to be “just friends,” that was the whole point of OMD. The powers that be at Marvel didn’t want them to be married, didn’t want them to divorce, but Mary Jane is a popular character so if she’s still going to be in the book she can only be just a friend. They’ll tease us with the possibility of them getting back together, but it ain’t happening.
It makes no sense though, in this new reality they had a long relationship and a bitter break-up so the two of them remaining friends stretches all believability (even for a comic book).
First there was the Civil War where the all the heroes fought each other, then Schism where the X-Men fought each other now we have the Avengers and X-Men fighting each other.
I agree with everything you said. The worst part for me is that with Peter unmasking himself Marvel was on the verge of doing something really great. It was uncharted territory for Spider-Man and there were a million possibilities if they only had the guts to follow through, but instead they just set the clock back and recycled the past.
@fodigg: Well she seems to still have her powers from Spider-Island. She was inoculated in issue #3 of her mini series but the very last page shows her still webslinging, and you can see her in the background in Avengers Academy #21 still shooting webs.
