While it does seem logical that you would be able to find them above ground, I don't know if I can allow a retcon for old, well established information. Eh, it's an easy (and admittedly, lazy) answer to a ridiculous question. There are countless women contributing to science on a daily basis. Marie Curie is just a very popular one that easily disproves the premise that women cannot contribute to science.
