@TheSwordsman: The Japanese were not preparing an unconditional surrender.
They had sent people to the Swedish embassy to start negotians but They on the other hand were preparing for the invasion. I thank God that my Grandfather wasn't on those invasion boats. I would go as far as to say that the A-BOMB helped Japan way more then it hurt it. First off those cities were already planned to get firebombed anyway. You probably are more mad about the concept of dropping the A-Bomb and how it kills people instead of the total casualties because if this was about the casualties you would be b*tchin about the Firebombing of Tokyo not the A-bomb.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT JAPAN WOULD BE LIKE TODAY IF WE HADN'T DROPPED THOSE BOMBS???
1. The USSR had already attacked Japan and probably would have pressed into Korea demanding all of Korea. Also if the blockade continued then the USSR might have pressed even farther and into China. The USSR might have been given an occupation zone of Japan.
2. We Would have invaded and suffered over a million casualties. With Japan suffering over 2 million. Tell me that using the A-bomb isn't worth saving all those lives. All the countless Japanese women and American women finding out their husbands died. All the sons and daughters who never would have seen their Dad again.
3. We except a conditional surrender and Japan is far from such a great country it is now without a democracy.
Japan was so contradictory with their actions that there is no way to know if they really would have surrendered or if they would have fought to the last man. One thing is for sure the World would be very different from it is now.
^ Asinine speculation at best.
