CV's Roundtable User Discussion 026 - Spotlight: Avengers

Good day all, the topic today will be Earth's Mightiest Heroes - the Avengers. With so much Avengers stuff going on these days, it felt like the right time for a roundtable focused on the team. In place of just yelling "Avengers Assemble" introduce yourself please.

PM: Hello guys, I'm Primmaster64.

Emp: Emp Gonzo- The Lazy Avenger. Special abilities: Olympic level chair whipping, swearing, encyclopedic knowledge of 90's cartoons.

Illy: I'm iLLituracy best known as iLLy, reppin' the off-topic board, shout out to ComicMan24, I want my money, RIP Sexy Merc

AXB: Howdy Boys and Girls, I'm Avenging-X-Bolt and my cuteness makes me being lately slightly less annoying.

And I am the (mostly) humble host Razztazz (or Tammy). So let's start as usual by saying what we have been reading recently.

PM: I haven't been able to read anything for quite some time now. Kinda sucks. :(

Emp: I've been keeping up with The Shade and the millions of webcomics i check in on. I also read the Warriors Three mini series, the Black Cat mini and Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis .

Illy: Avengers-related? I stay current with New Avengers and Avengers, I haven't read Secret and Academy in some time. But I dropped Academy before Fear Itself, I'm just behind in Secret Avengers. Other Avenger-related titles I read: Daredevil, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America's titles, Venom, Wolverine, Wolverine and the X-Men, uhm...Fantastic Four. Most anything Hickman's writing, really.

AXB: Most recently, I just finished the Tomasi/Didio/Giffen run of Outsiders..............and am wishing I had my money back......and wishing for a new Creeper series in the new 52

Maybe I am right to assume that the average comic fan is not as familiar with the Avengers as some of the other superhero teams (though maybe I am wrong) Either way, let's start this off by naming one memorable Avengers story arc.

PM: Avenger arc? Hmmmm. I can only remember Siege if that counts.

Emp: Kree-Skrull War, where the Avengers get caught up in a war between the Kree and the Skrulls (duh). It was one of the first major events at marvel as I recall. Years later it was revealed as the start of the Secret Invasion.

Illy: One memorable Avengers story for me? Off the top of my head I'd have to say Kang Dynasty. By far one of my more favorite modern day Avengers story. But since me and Kurt Busiek aren't on the best terms I'd like to change my answer to Earth's Mightiest and The Unspoken, arcs in The Mighty Avengers by Dan Slott. Brilliantly written, kind of redeemed the character of Hank Pym for me for a number of reasons.

For me it is a bit of an older one, where the Avengers face off against Taskmaster for the first time. So with the team properly introduced, who are the first five characters that come to mind when you think Avengers?

PM: First 5? Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-man( I don't know why), Giant Man.

Illy: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. Mostly the originals save Captain America who came along later and Hulk who was part of the original roster, but, yeah. They're kind of the definitive Avengers for me.

Emp: Captain America, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Thor and Hank Pym. With Cap, Stark and Thor, they are the big three of Marvel. It would be like the Justice League with Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman. I've always been a bigger fan of She-Hulk as opposed to regular Hulk and Hank Pym is a favorite of mine after Mighty Avengers and Avengers Academy.

AXB: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel (soon to be Captain Marvel)

For me for some reason the relationships come to mind first, so I would say Scarlet Witch, Vision, Hawkeye, Mockingbird and then maybe Black Widow (pretty unconventional choices I guess.) So how do the Avengers rank among your favourite comic book teams?

PM: Well, I'm not much of a Avenger reader or Marvel for that matter, but they would rank like 3rd for me after Teen Titans.

Emp: With the exception of the Ultimate and the EMH versions, relatively low actually. The Avengers have never been a favorite of mine as a group. But I do like/respect them.

Illy: The Avengers are probably my top team when it comes to comics. The only other team they could possibly come second to is the Fantastic Four, but only because the Fantastic Four have had such a great history whereas the Avengers have had their rough patches. Not that the Fantastic Four hasn't, but really I don't think the Avengers came into prominence and the forefront until the last ten years even though they were one of the first teams around in the Marvel Universe as we know it today.

AXB: I would have to say the Avengers are my second favorite team just below the Justice League.

I would come out more in line with Emp, healthy respect, but not as much exposure to them (other than an occasional reading of Secret Avengers). So the Avengers sometimes come under some criticism for their name which isn’t necessarily relevant to the team. What do you think?

PM: Well, if the team name is The Avengers, then shouldn't you avenge something?

Illy: I'm pretty sure Stan Lee said he picked the name because it sounded cool. It doesn't bother me really.

Emp: I like the name, it sounds awesome, but it doesn't really send a great message. One thing I've always found interesting about the Avengers is that the original group had no common ground other than fighting crime, Joe Casey brought it up in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes mini series. What do a demigod, a billionaire, a soldier and a monster have in common? Nothing.

AXB: I agree with Illy. I love the name like Pooh loves hunny.

5 out of 5 Viners prefer the Avengers to fight Loki than the X-Men.
5 out of 5 Viners prefer the Avengers to fight Loki than the X-Men.

What have you been looking forward to more, X-Men versus Avengers or the movie?

PM: The movie.

AXB: The movie no freakin contest. I probably won't even read AVX

Emp: The movie, it had the tools and it had the talent and it means way more. I don't know why people are making such a big deal about Avengers vs X-men, they did this crap already.

PM: AVX doesn't catches my interest to be honest.

Illy: The movie. Probably at no fault of AVX, I'm just not interested in what comics are offering at the moment.

So everyone wants the movie more, so let's talk about that. Do you feel like you have seen too much of the movie so far from all the promos and ads?

Emp: I've already had the movie spoiled for me, thanks a bunch, Tumblr.

PM: Too much in what sense? Plot or marketing? If plot, then a lil bit but there a some things that we can't figure out, like how did Thor get back? How did Loki contacted those aliens? Ect. As for marketing, I think I see quite a lot.

Illy: Nah, I don't feel like it was ruined for me. I guess I'm more into intricate details. The trailer doesn't really get into anything past Loki has friends and they're going to rough up the Earth.

AXB: I generally avoided all of the promos for the movie. Their just seems to be way too much content being released.

For me personally the promo after Captain America last year was enough. So the cast for the movie is set, and with an expected cash haul of “a lot” we can probably reasonably already expect a sequel . Who would you want to see additionally in the sequel among the cast? Or who might you like to see recast? Or the next villain?

PM: Well Thor and CA will have their sequels, so no problem there. As for a villain I would like to see Thanos.

Emp: I'd love to see the Masters of Evil. Maybe include Hank Pym and the Wasp, maybe Black Panther or Carol Danvers.

Illy: Edward Norton coming back as Bruce Banner may be farfetched, but, I think I'd like to see that. It probably won't happen for the sake of consistency. Additional cast that I'd like to see is Hank and Janet. Vision. Villains I'd like to see in the next Avengers movie is Ultron, because he would probably work best in translation. But I'd love to see Kang the Conqueror, maybe Taskmaster, Zemo, the Masters of Evil.

AXB: I'd love for Eddi Norton to come back. Ms.Marvel would definitely be a great addition as would Black Panther and/or Vision

Let's change gears for the last question, JLA versus Avengers , who are the last four standing?

No Caption Provided

Emp: I think the folks in charge already did this – Batman, Thor, Hulk, Superman

PM: Superman , Thor, Sentry, Green Lantern

Illy: Batman. No one else would be standing because Batman wouldn't allow it.

AXB: Once again I agree with Illy. batman would fight Quesada to the death before allowing such a battle.

Fair enough, I think I would say Batman, Wolverine, Wonder Woman and Thor. So that is it for now, thanks all for taking part.

Emp: I'm Emp Gonzo and I'm going to be King of the Pirates. Or maybe I'll just buy an eyepatch and drink some rum.

PM: See you guys around! Up, up and away!

Illy: I hate you all but it has been a relative pleasure chatting.

PM: Please, you love us. You can't deny this.

So that is it for our Avengers spotlight, do you agree with us? Or perhaps not? Anyone you want to see in the next Avengers movie. Is anyone looking forward to AVX more than the movie?
