I think Batman once said that Superman has the best secret identity because since he doesn't wear a mask, no one thinks he's hiding anything. That's pretty clever.
I don't necessarily agree that Batman's villains are a reflection of who he is. His villains were originally created in more of a pulp fiction, film noir vide. In the late 1930s, early 1940s when Batman was being established, Dick Tracy-like villains were the norm. The Joker was a trickster, and Catwoman was The Cat, the sexy fem fatale. Those villains changed with the times.
It might be the biggest cliche in comics that dead heroes and villains never stay dead, but in the comic book world itself I'm sure they don't think that way. They believe dead is dead, I think. That being the case, I don't think there's a "if I should come back to life" clause in their wills. They always seem to be surprised when someone rises from the ashes.
I don't quite feel like an expert. Why did he decide to wear that red skull mask? What exactly is that cosmic cube? What makes him a formidable enemy to go toe-to-toe with Captain America? Is he suppose to be a Nazi super-genius? Oh, well. I guess that's what Wikipedia is for if I care enough to delve further.
Batman respects the law too much to kill someone if not in self defense. That's why he doesn't carry lethal weapons, that and he hates guns. If he can justify killing the Joker, he can justify anyone else. Plus, if he did, he would become an outlaw.
