Wow ok then I was not expecting this. I was thinking of exactly where I needed to start to explain this simple concept...maybe start with how a * represents something unknown in a word and can be replaced with multiple things, how quotation marks can be used to explain something is an abstract thought, but I honestly couldn't simplify it enough to get to a point where it could be easily explained to someone who can't grasp the concept in the first place, and began to think maybe the concept was simply too far fetched for anyone but myself to comprehend. To make sure I am wasn't crazy, I read this post to my 8 year old niece. When I was done, I asked the question you have all been so quizzically struggling with:

What do you think I mean by a "*-man" character?

Well, I'll let her answer your question with all of her 8 years of accrued intellect and wisdom:

"Umm....a guy with "man" in his name?"

Well there you have it folks, what the heck is a "-man" character? A HERO WITH "MAN" IN HIS NAME.

Still confused? I have a 4 year old cousin I can go ask for you all

@TheCannon: You can't make a reasonable conjecture to that question based on the list alone?

A friend of mine (Marvel enthusiast btw) said one of the reasons he didn't like DC was because of all the "-Man" characters they have, i.e. Superman, Batman, Aquaman. But as I thought about it, Marvel has several as well, Spider-man, Iron Man, Iceman, Ant-Man...

So does anyone know who has the most? If not, start listing and I'll keep a tally. No -girl or -woman or -boy, just -man.

Here is the count so far:

Marvel 26

  • Iron Man
  • Iceman
  • Ant-Man
  • Spider-Man
  • Molecule Man
  • Multiple Man
  • D-Man/Demolition Man
  • Mole Man
  • Absorbing Man
  • Wonder Man
  • Machine Man
  • 3-D Man
  • Purple Man
  • Sandman
  • Stilt Man
  • Titanium Man
  • Impossible Man
  • Tattooed Man
  • Radioactive Man
  • Hydro-Man
  • Dragon Man
  • Molten Man
  • Psycho-Man
  • Master Man
  • Sugar Man
  • X-Man

DC 20

  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Aquaman
  • Hawkman
  • Deadman
  • Animal Man
  • Plastic Man
  • Elongated Man
  • Catman
  • Robotman
  • Negative Man
  • Animal Vegetable Mineral Man
  • Cyborg Superman
  • Floronic Man
  • Doll Man
  • Ragman
  • Sandman
  • Green Man
  • Tattooed Man
  • Garbage Man

I know I must be missing several though for each publisher

You know the concept of "alpha male" has to do with breeding right? Which of these guys has more than 1 kid? They all fail at being Alpha IMO but Scott Summers has had the most women fight over him so I picked him (Psylocke, Jean, Emma off the top of my head). Currently Clark is friend zoned by Lois, Batman has a son with Talia but other girlfriends are insignificant, Thor and Cap aren't into women from what I can tell, finally Wolverine might be a close second.

I think upon character creation writers/editors should have hard stats in mind, like this character can lift x tons and run y mph. Then research feats that could fall within that realm. The problem is there are 2 huge superhero book publishers, and fans of BOTH don't want to feel inferior (I am guessing OP is here because someone in a Marvel character vs Flash thread owned him with those panels). So writers will waste panels showing how strong Cap's shield is or how fast Flash can run, when the real superiority in comics comes from story telling.

The whole "angrier as he gets stronger" thing really doesn't make sense, and I don't think it really works that way. If this were true he would never lose, since the more he gets his a%% kicked, the angrier he will get, and eventually overcome any enemy. The thing is though he has been knocked out and neutralized multiple times, so he does have limits. In these conditions though, he will be extremely angry without getting beaten, so maybe he wins. But since he can't fly and still wouldn't be as fast, Superman can evade until Hulk's power gets down to reasonable levels, then knock him out with 1 punch (something an overclocked Iron Man suit did) or 1000 punches in a second if that is what it takes

hulks strength ,durability, stamina ect increase with his anger, you can't say "it doesn't works that way" because it has been established that hulks anger increases his powers, he has been KO before because he was probably against someone really powerful or he was beaten at the start of the battle by someone powerful, guys like spider-man and wolverine go against hulk with help pf PIS

I am just saying it isn't clear cut. Regardless of the statement he gets stronger as he gets angrier, he has still been beaten. There is a laundry list of Marvel characters who have beaten Hulk even though that statement exists. Hulk is beatable, and Superman is definitely a candidate for someone who can overpower him.

Also there is the simple list of powers

...........................Hulk............ Superman

Strength ................x ......................x

Stamina ................x....................... x

Durability ...............x...................... x

Heat Vision .............o..................... x

Flight ....................o..................... x

Ice Breath ............o........................ x

Super speed ............o ....................x

Amnesia Kiss ..........o..................... x (Superman can just kiss him and make him forget the 2 years of anger buildup :P )

Last one's a joke but you get the idea, everything Hulk can do, Superman can do as well if not better, but Superman has versatility
