I've only watched the first four episodes of the Netflix-series Daredevil and this came to my mind: the series is great because it takes its time to show a regular guy making a small difference in a lot of people's life. That's also, for me, what Spider-man is about : a normal guy, who struggles through life and fixes problems one at a time, making everyone's life in his neighboorhood better.
Spider-man is no Thor, no Iron Man and doesn't deal with universal-scale problems. That's what bothered me in the Garfield movies, why would this teenager tackle threats this big? How is he able to do it? I just don't believe it, I don't understand it, and my suspension of disbelief is gone.
Spider-man is too complex a character to make him beliveable in a single movie.
Thor is a north god -> he fights Frost Giants : "all right, no problem with that !"
Iron man makes robotic armors -> he fights robots : "makes sense to me !"
Spider-man was a kid genius, bitten by radioactive spider, who struggles to pay rent and was abandonned by his parents -> he fights Electro who can level the city while Spidey makes jokes : "yeah !...wait, what? why is he cracking jokes? Didn't he just dump his girlfriend?"
A TV-series would make Spider-man a much more likeable and understandable character. It could focus on street-level problems (and not constantly go back to his origins which we really don't care about (or briefly allude to it just like in Netflix Daredevil)), have him save a kid trapped on a roller-coaster, have him fight flying clowns or hammerhead (and not something related to his origins, which, as you can recall, we don't care about). It could slowly build up to something bigger, something like the spider-tracer killings or "New ways to die". Something fun; with some heavy character moments from time to time.
And THEN, you can have some amazing, astounding moments where (AvX style) the average guy saves everyone. He's no heavy-hitter, he's no Thor, but still, he saves everyone. Cap pats his shoulder and says : "Kid, you're my hero". And there, you have it : "how little you may feel, you can still make a difference. Moreover, if, by any chance, you have power, you have the responsability to do something and one day, you're gonna make a big difference".
So what do you think guys ? Do we need a fun, light-hearted Spider-man on Netflix interacting with Daredevil and so on ?
