Frankie Alive Alive 0

Frankenstein Alive Alive #2 – There is a story in here – and it’s perfectly fine – but the comic exists just to look at some Bernie Wrightson art. Writer Steve Niles is telling a perfectly fine story, but mostly he is just getting out of Wrightson’s way and making sure that the narration boxes don’t cover too much art. My GOD is this art amazing! The whole comic looks nice. Sure, Wrightson can’t produce something like this on a monthly basis, but we use that “good art is worth waiting for” in ca...

Saga has not disappointed 0

Saga has easily been my favorite series for the last 5 months. I never expect anything less than greatness when Brian K. Vaughn is writing and he has not disappointed me yet. With a ceiling so high eventually my expectations would fall flat and in this issue it did just that. For the first time ever I think Saga was just "ok". Just being "ok" works for a lot of series but not for Saga. I feel like Saga belongs in another league so I hold it to higher expectations.Like every issue before it Chapte...

Surprise me with a Revival. 0

Revival has been one of those series that shocks its readers with disturbing plot twists and visuals while also drawing them in with a murder mystery! It is now five issues in and Tim Seeley and Mike Norton have not slowed down. This series has been outrageous all along, but is it possible for it to become even more insane? This issue seems to be the first of the series that hasn’t introduced new pivotal characters. Rather, it seems that this issue has actually left out a very pivotal character a...

Fatale Issue 9 Review 0

Last month’s Fatale #8 was the series' best issue yet, combining a smart script with exciting action. To say I was looking forward to issue #9 is a bit of an understatement. With that said, this issue did slow things down just a tad, going back to the slower pace readers have learned to expect from Ed Brubaker. One of the many things I liked about Fatale #8 was how it ended with a tense cliffhanger: Suzy Scream getting abducted by the evil Method Church. This month, the action opens up with Miss ...

Ironclad Review 0

Marvel Now has begun, and with it we get a new start to Iron Man. The story itself is pretty accessible to someone who skipped out on the previous series, or has just decided to use this number one to see what the character is about. Gillen does a nice job in establishing a bit of Tony’s character in the first few pages, but things really pick up when the plot actually starts moving. It’s a pretty simple one, but the writing is strong enough that it’s very entertaining. Much of it just having to...

Review Go SMASH!!! 0

Throughout the past few weeks we have been seeing a lot of the Marvel Now! titles being released. I must admit that I was not excited for Indestructible Hulk at all. The Hulk is not really a character I am interested in. This is the first Hulk title that I have picked up and I was surprised with what I saw.Hulk is known for smashing and destroying things, but you can’t do that for an entire issue, every issue. Mark Waid gives us a reason to continue reading from the start. That reason is Bruce B...

FF #1 Review 0

Marvel has tried really hard in the past decade to get new readers on board with their material. They started the Ultimate comics line for that sole purpose and they didn't stop there. They did the Point One Initiative (which technically is still going) and now we're at Marvel NOW!, a line-wide relaunch of most of the major titles. Some of these relaunches have been very effective, others not so much. What makes the successful ones good and the bad ones tank? Well, I know the answer to one of th...

Thor Brings The Thunder! 0

I’ve witnessed Thor do a lot of things in my time reading his epic tales of blood and sacrifice. I’ve watched him decimate hordes of the undead, reverse the misdirected rage of his brother, Loki, and emerge victorious in story arcs that rival the epicness of The Fantastic Four in scale. And for all of these displays of heroism there has remained but one emotion that I’ve never seen cross the God of Thunder’s chiseled face … fear. That’s what I love about Thor: God of Thunder #1. Thor is terrifie...

Captain Marvel Now 0

It shouldn't surprise anyone that Captain America is getting the relaunch treatment at Marvel. Thanks to the film bearing his name and this summer's The Avengers, he's probably more popular now than he has ever been. Now almost all of the cast of Marvel's The Avengers have been relaunched with an all new ongoing comic book series, some with more success than others.Rick Remender, who has a knack for writing truly bizarre comics, has taken the reigns on Cap and has positioned him in a place that ...

All New X-Review 0

All-New X-Men #1Brain Michael Bendis – writerStuart Immonen – pencilsWade Von Grawbadger – inkerMarte Gracia – coloristVC’s Cory Petit – lettererI LOVED this book! The opening was great with the Beast starting to undergo another painful mutation, one that he feels he may not survive. His prayer was wonderful. I really liked the new mutant sequence and it really caught the vibe of Giant Size X-Men #1. While I hate to see Cyclops as a jerk and totally on Magneto’s side it wasn’t difficult to accep...

“In Wade We Trust” 0

Deadpool #1“In Wade We Trust”Marvel NOW! introduces Deadpool #1, and they assure you it’s not a reboot or an origin story! This debut issue was definitely a fun and entertaining read. I mean, if you don't agree that Deadpool gutting open a Godzilla-like creature is awesome or pumping Franklin D. Roosevelt with tons of bullets, I don't know what is. I'm sure, the overall premise is silly and a bit bizarre, but that's what we want in a Deadpool book: insanity. Oh, and blood. And gore which there is...

Get on board now! 0

It’s been a long time since I was this invested in a new world, right off the bat. Issue #1 of Saga introduced us to this space opera setting, torn by war, with a variety of imaginative and colorful concepts and ideas, and issue #2 continues that trend, leaving the reader eager to turn each page to see what wonders await. I wouldn’t say Saga is revolutionary, it’s just very very very well done. The medium is not being used in any new ways, but the original ideas and fantastic setting make it fee...

My Saga Issue One Review 0

As Vaughan builds up the universe in this issue, Staples takes us along for the ride. The pencils jump off the page (almost as if they are in 3D) to bring these characters, creatures and settings to life. I realize that a lot of the backgrounds are sparse or absent, but the expressions on the characters' faces and the details in the creations easily overcome that subtle flaw. Visually, this is a great book.I wouldn't describe this book as Star Wars at all. Star Wars was a band of characters gett...
