Okay so I said Batman. My reasoning is subject to debate, typically, but I think it's interesting enough for some to agree with:
Iron Man is a genius when it comes to engineering and technology, more so than Batman any day of the week, but...
Batman never makes mistakes that render him the villain or a complete 100% A-Hole.
Look at Civil War and the events following Original Sin and Axis (or SIXIS if like me you think that title looks wrong).
Bruce Wayne hides his smarts behind a dumb playboy ego, Stark wastes his intellect on being a dumb playboy. Stark also gives in to alcoholism and being a shallow jerk. He's just your friend when the going's good or if he's on the team most likely to win.
Batman is straight and narrow and always thinking ahead and acting ahead, apart from the times an underaged employee called Robin tends to get himself killed!
Imperialism is slightly different to Capitalism, but if they didn't try to protect their global assets and allies (whether they acquisitioned them through war, democracy or plain old business), then they and the world they've helped to build would be buggered. So yes, but not because 'MURICAH!!! and not because the rest of the world isn't bothered as some particularly proud people are always quick to assume.

I'm going with Punisher:
His childhood sweetheart was raped and committed suicide as a result. He then found her older brother dead in Vietnam.
Barely survived the war and gave up his military career to raise his family and live a peaceful life.
Wife and two kids shot to pieces in broad daylight. He survives, they don't.
He was trained to save whole countries and couldn't stop them being killed right before his eyes. Torturous life sentence right there.
Eventually loses his whole bloodline as a result of his own infamy.
Superheroes send murderous supervillains to prison, they break out and kill again, thinking they'll be rehabilitated. He stops them with finality and they brand him a psychotic serial killer, but use him anyway. Decades of alienation and isolation.
After all those years, rather than bring that crime family to justice, the superheroes just teamed up on Frank, even though Spider-man felt that Frank's problems made his own look small in comparison. No wonder he's grumpy.
Every now and then he shows signs of being able to move on and then reverts to the same old guilty tortured family man mentality.
He tries to distance himself from Kathryn O'Brien after rescuing her, then realises he loved her after all when she bleeds to death in his arms after standing on a landmine in the middle of nowhere.
He finds out she secretly had his child and forces himself to give her to Kathryn's sister for adoption.
Eventually lost every friend and ally he ever had in the MAX series, except Fury.
Is brainwashed and forced to murder his ally's fiancee with his bare hands in an initiation ritual.
His wife and kids are resurrected in a bid to force him to give up pursuing Osborn and The Hood during Dark Reign.
He kills them there and then to prevent them being used for evil purposes.
Jigsaw later hires a disfigured assassin to masquerade as his wife, as though she survived.
Found out, through being murdered, that Heaven was a load of bollocks.
Frank goes on the darkest and most shattering journey of vengeance after he saves a Moldovan girl forced to work on the streets after her baby is murdered by her retainers. Not the most violent by the quantity of death, but the most shockingly brutal and savage. In the end, you feel like everyone involved has been rescued or redeemed, but Garth Ennis rips you back to reality and suggests that Viorica might survive, or she just might not. Right in the feels, but you have to go through the whole gruelling thing!
