Why indie comics are important.

Yes, indie comics are important.  I mean, literature is art, and art is about expression, and there is no better expression than unlimited expression.  Sure, Marvel and DC have their own appeal, but there is nothing more refreshing than reading something that is solely the unrestricted imagination of talented individuals.  For me, comics is about escape, and it's hard to escape when you see an asterisk that tells you you have to read twelve other issues to understand what that character just said.  With indie comics, and especially Archaia, this isn't an issue.  And that's why Indie comics are important, to give a weary comic book fan something fresh and liberating from the "normal" comic books.

The comic book industry needs all the help it can get, after all it's lost a lot of ground to the novel, video game, television, toy, and movie industry.  But hey at least it's above the poetry industry, which has been on life support for 100 years or so.

@Dreadnaught: You have a good point.  However, the movie industry has brought some attention to comics, although it's not helping Indie comics very well.  :(  But you're right, there are industries worse off than comics.  It does seem to me that comics aren't very far off from novels, though.

Indy Comics are as important as Indy Films, in that it gives creators a break-in to the industry, at the very least getting their work out there to reach SOMEONE. Be them fans or employers, all it takes is that one person so take notice and suddenly you're a superstar. "Torso" did it for Bendis, for example, and now he's Marvel's go-to guy.

Of course, there's that other-added benefit of there being alternative choices for virtually anyone who wants to read something new, besides the Capes-N-Tights set. Recommendations?

"Proof", anything by Warren Ellis, and "I Kill Giants" should please just about anyone...
