Will Famke Jessen return as Jean Grey?

Following the news of Patrick Stewart teasing he may soon be back on our screens as Professor X, it seems another X-Men alum is also set to rejoin the franchise.

Famke Janssen, who played the incredibly powerful Jean Grey and even stronger Phoenix, responded coyly when asked by MTV if there was a possibility she'd return to the role.

"One never knows. Jean Grey, the Phoenix … she finds a way to reincarnate herself constantly, so one never knows. Stay tuned.

Upon being asked if she had been offered a role in the upcoming sequel to X-Men: First Class, she replied, "One never knows. Jean Grey, the Phoenix … she finds a way to reincarnate herself constantly, so one never knows."

Though this is far from confirming her involvement, Janssen also wouldn't deny that she would appear in the sequel, titled X-Men: Days of Future Past. She asserted that she was "in no position to say anything," before adding "Stay tuned."

Seeing as the storyline for Days of Future Past revolves around time-travel, with an older Kitty Pryde transferring her mind back to her younger, present day self to prevent a pivotal moment in history, it's entirely possible both Stewart and Janssen will indeed reprise their roles in the film.

So,Would you like to see the older generation of X-Men characters return, or should the baton be passed on fully to the likes of McAvoy and Fassbender?

I never liked her as Jean Grey. Her performance wasn't really that strong, her Jean came off as a really unlikable person, and the chemistry with Hugh Jackman just wasn't there.

I really wouldn't be against recasting the role.

God I hope not. She looked too old to play Jean in the first movie, and now it's more than 10 years later. But I hope Jean is in the film... just re-casted.

She was the best thing about X3, she really gave the best performance and she had utter crap to work with. See, I like Famke Janssen because she spoke out after X3 and said that a lot of her friends who had read the comics were disappointed and that she had urged the producers and director to tie up the loose ends in the story. See here...

When I did the first one [X-Men film] people kept saying 'Jean Grey turns into the Phoenix!' So I looked into the story and thought 'Oh wow, I hope one day they're doing it.' They didn't do it the way I would've liked to have them do it. "

Then she went on to say...

"The way it works is that some people get paid a lot of money on those movies and I'm not one of them. And they need to give them as much screentime as possible. That's really how it works.

"And I kept fighting it, too. I said 'Look, you set up the character like that in the beginning of the film. You have her kill Patrick Stewart's character. You have her kill her own fiancee in the film. And then where do you take it? You've got to follow it through. You can't just leave it dangling there.' But they did."

"People I know who really like the X-Men comic books really love that [Phoenix] story arc. It felt to me like a missed opportunity. People ask 'Are they going to come back and do it and I say, no that's now done. It was done in that way."

I respect an actor who has opinions and is honest when something just doesn't work. Actors get blamed for not being able to "carry" a movie and yet a lot of the time it's elements of story and plot that are responsible (though obviously not always).

So if Famke goes back to the franchise, I appreciate that there's a chance she's keeping us in mind and making sure it's right for Jean Grey and how she's portrayed. Also, it's called Days of FUTURE and Past so she has the right to be old...who knows? We might even get young Jean Grey too!
