Personally I think that an origin story (Birthright) or all-star superman are not the way to introduce yourself to Superman. They are great stories but should be read after you have read a current timeline story arc.
Superman: For Tomorrow is good but can be slow and (IMO) is a little out of character for Superman.
Yeah - but that might be type of DC reading that he is not ready for yet judging from his comments. Flash doesn't really have day to day issues like he is interested. Just a guess.
Small when you can find one that has a good owner. I have been shopping from the same store for years now - small with the owner pretty much the only person there most of the time. I get great treatment and better deals than the bigger ones around (like Golden Apple and Meltdown). I even drive an hour out of my way every Wednesday to get my new comics from him.
