Top 10 Things Wrong with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

I think that we can all agree that the Star Wars prequel trilogy was rather a disappointment to those of us who grew up with the original trilogy. That being said I have narrowed it down to the top 10 things that I didn't like about the prequel trilogy. And here they are (just remember the it goes from bad to worse):

List items

  • the Saberstaff/Double-Bladed Lightsaber/etc - I must admit than when I first saw Darth Maul ignite both ends of the Saberstaff I was awed. Yet, when I got to thinking about it the weapon made little sense as anything other than a show piece. The point of a staff is to give the wielder more leverage, but you would cut your own hands off if you tried. Even the electrostaff used by General Grevious' bodyguards is a better weapon.

  • This is Jar Jar. Do I need to explain further. This was an attempt to create another Chewie, but it failed miserably. Jar Jar should have been abandoned on an asteroid (without gear), or shoved off a cliff, or ejected into space at the soonest possible instant.

  • With the vast expanse of the galaxy to visit, why do we always end up on Tatooine? They could have used the opportunity to create a completely new planet or visited one of the myriad other planets that were already established, but no one seems to have the imagination to actually do it.

  • Anakin was to eventually become Darth Vader, the scariest Sith Lord ever, so Anakin should have been cool. What we got was a whiny brat that should have been slapped repeatedly. I keep seeing Darth Vader and Anakin (said with disdain) and trying to come to terms with the fact that the one became the other. One was a terror of awesome proportions. The other was a whiny teenager who became a whiny adult.

  • No Attachments - This rule makes no sense. Why would you fight for anything if you didn't have an attachment to it. The Jedi should have been religious recluses according to this rule. They should have been divorced from all life and conflict in the galaxy and never raised a finger to help the Republic.

  • 2 Sith Rule - Finally we were getting another Star Wars movie that could have had epic lightsaber and force duals on a massive scale with hundreds of Jedi and Sith. Instead we got one lightsaber duel maybe two in each movie. I realize that there is the arena scene in Attack of the Clones, but those weren't duels.

  • Boba Fett should never have been in this movie. Part of his appeal is the fact that he was a mysterious unknown, a feared and respected bounty hunter. Now we know he is no more special than any of the thousands of other clones. By giving him a face and a background the mystique is gone.

  • The clone troopers were fine as far as the point of the story goes. However, their origin should have raised huge red flags for the Jedi. In addition, the Jedi, being attuned as they are to the Force, should have had at least an inkling of what was coming - that's the point of the Force. They never should have been cut down by what amounts to something less than a Stormtrooper. At least the Stormtroopers had the ability to think for themselves and get creative.

  • 9. Darth Maul Dies - In the very same episode that gave us the buffoon that is Jar Jar, we got the most awesome Sith since Darth Vader and what did Lucas do? Killed him. He could have been, should have been, the main Sith antagonist for the entire series. Forget the emperor, he should have been Darth Maul's apprentice. There was so much menace and evil in Darth Maul that the comic book artist have been copying his look to the point that it is losing its effectiveness anymore. And no disrespect to Christopher Lee, an excellent actor, but forget Count Dooku too. He was nothing compared to Darth Maul. He just wasn't evil enough.

  • Midichlorians - This is absolutely the most egregious sin committed by George Lucas in the prequels. We came to believe that the Force was a mystical energy that bound the universe together. If you were gifted with this connection you could tap into the universe and listen to the very will of the cosmos. Then came the midichlorians and the Force wasn't the same. You just had to have what amounts to a bacterium living in your blood and you had access to the most powerful force in the galaxy. The mystical connection was lost and the Force became mundane, almost ordinary.
