Well they could start just fighting crime somewhere trying to do some good as a person with special abilities.

Maybe by chance this new hero would get involved in fighting some infamous villains and word would get out they took this guy down. Or word would just get out this persons helping out as a superhero. They'd slowly build trust, if there good I suppose they'd get noticed more then if they sucked. But they'd gain respect by just being a superhero, if there at it long enough there bound to team up with another hero sometime,they'd get recognition eventually.
