While I enjoy some of the new 52 creative teams...some I just have a problem with. So, for the next couple of days I am going to blog about who I would like to see on DC's main books. This list is in no way realistic, it is just a wish list.
Let me start with the flagship books
Batman - I would keep Scott Snyder on the writing, he just gets Batman....But I would reunite him with his Detective Comics mate Jock
Detective Comics - Phil Hester on the script with Bill Sinkewicz on art
Superman - Erik Larsen
Action Comics - Jonathan Hickman and Todd McFarlaine
Justice League - Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson - because if you ever read Astro City you would understand.
Wonder Woman - Ben Caldwell on words and pictures.
For me at least, it seems as if a back issue comic usually takes longer to actually read than a modern comic. I don't know if its because there is more emphasis on the image over the story now. So, it always makes me question, should a collector just buy back issues from places like mycomicshop dot com or ebay at usually half the price of what the original issue was, or buy new at 3 and 4 bucks a pop? I don't want to sound like one of those old fogies, but I remember when comics were 60 and 75 cents. (or as I remember them, selling 3 golf balls.)
This one has been bothering me for a while. One of my favorite comics growing up was All-Star Squadron which I read off and on throughout its run. It had some great stories of the WWII era JSA and some new teammates thrown in there for suspense. But lately (and I'm talking the last 10 years or so) DC has stayed away from WWII era stories like they were the plague. Is it the fact that there would be no suspense on whether the character has a legit chance of dying? Or, do they think that they will somehow screw up an already screwed up continuity? Or, it might be the fact that they can't really explain why the "Super-heroes" didn't go over to Germany or Japan and just royally kick some tail.
My solution, set it on another earth. It looks like the 52DC is going to have an Earth2, why don't they have an EarthII expressly for telling WWII stories. That way they can actually do whatever they want with the characters and not feel the need to be tied to some imaginary continuity.
Apparently there is a movement to name today as creator owned day. There are a lot of good titles that are creator owned that people should read. Some of my favorites include: Grendel, Strangers in Paradise, Bone, Preacher, Jennifer Blood, Walking Dead, Invincible. People should try these, they are really well written and engaging.
Not only doe she let me indulge in my lifelong hobby of comic collecting, but yesterday she surprised me by buying bags and boards for my massive collection. Now, I know that you are thinking that that is no big deal...but, the closest place to get bags and boards is over 90 min away from my town.
Sometimes teaching can be richly rewarding, then there are days like today. Kids today seem to have no direction and are not willing to work to reach their goals. I say that, but then I have some really good debate kids that really try. Wish I could have kids like that all day.
