As far as the experience with an aliens powers go...
Here is Animal Man sorting through different dialects... which is what animals have learned and developed...I have never seen him copy base powers like that though.
Not that it means he could beat Superman, but he did use the damage resistance of a roach against Overman. (although to be fair, this may be considered PIS)
