THE FINAL STRAW, MAN!!

Thanks to Bleeding Cool (see this link http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/07/03/marvel-now-to-relaunch-a-new-title-every-week-for-five-months/), Marvel's unveiled their post AvX plans, and it includes the dreaded word RELAUNCH. But unlike the New 52, they're not doing anything to the continuity--but there will be time travel, an 18-member Avengers roster, and much, much.......too much (one guy knows what I'm talking about: http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/3833250.html). The initiative: Marvel NOW! (more info here: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=62892). And now, my thoughts on this, in no particular order:

REALLY, Marvel? Re-he-he-he-eally, Marvel? Are you seriously trying to get yourself (figuratively) moidered? Though the title of this implies something, let me tell you, it WILL be the final straw if anything happens to the only modern Big Two title I read: the current volume of The Defenders. I've just--I've had it to here with DC and Marvel's shenanigans:

Marvel NOW! has got to be the most BONE-HEADED, STUPIDEST, IDIOTIC, UNGRATEFUL, DOLLAR-SCENTED, PEA/HARE-BRAINED decision/get-rich-quick-scheme I have EVER heard of!!!! It only confirms one of many things I've wanted and wished would happen right now--a COUP D'TAT in mainstream comic book company management! I want Quesada, Loeb, EVEN Alonso OUTTA HERE!!!! Everything described in the Marvel NOW! details--it's not the right approach! Don't those 40% creative-minded 60% business-minded morons know ANYTHING? ANY of the things I've advocated for in my past "how-to-save-the-industry" blog posts would've worked much, much better than this! I hated the idea of The New 52, and this just makes it worse.

And yes, there is the return of Jean Grey--but I didn't want to see it like the way All-New X-Men was described!! It's just--that's nothing! Worthless!

Seriously---can't you do anything ELSE??? Is there some sort of mental block inhibiting the fine folks over at both the Distinguished and Marvelous competition? Can't they do anything OTHER than Marvel NOW!? Can't they????

Something tells me a fine-tuned, heartfelt letter is in order, and I intend for them to get it before making what may or may not be a terrible, terrible mistake. For if this affects the only Big Two title I read.....that's it. I'm done. No more modern Marvel or DC. My money will only go to their reprint division--and even then, I'll simply buy the books secondhand (HA-HA!). Something is rotten in the state of Denmark...I only hope the shlubs in what remains of the Mighty Marvel Bullpen realize it before it's too late.

@RPatrick: That I MAY be, but I just think that what they're doing--shuffle around creators on titles, add members of one franchise to another, etc.--those gimmicks have been beaten into the ground so much it's making most modern, corporate comic books the dreaded b-word: BORING. The only modern Big Two title I've even found REMOTELY interesting is Fraction's Defenders. I just got issues 8 and 9, and I like the story they have; plus, Jamie McKelvie's art is great! It ought to be animated. The rest of the stuff Marvel's putting out right now that isn't reprinted material (which is what I read, given how late I came into comics)---not so much. From what I've read myself, and looked up on Wiki, and browsed through issues in comic shops, Spider-Man isn't so amazing right now, the X-Men are the direct opposite of uncanny, Hulk is not so incredible at the moment, and Thor isn't looking too mighty. I'd read Avengers Academy (which I think has a good premise), but things in that book aren't looking good, storywise. And of course, Avengers Vs. X-Men, the supposed endcap of everything set forth by Avengers Dissassembled, is the worst offender of them all.

I think Mr. Darkmount is over-reacting. Just a tad.

Dude, just wait for the titles to come out before you start losing your mind.

@VenomMelendez: Why are you calling me "slick"? Anyway, look, Hickman I'm sure will do fine with Avengers, but as to how they're integrating that team and the X-Men---that isn't the best way to do so! Adding every one of the X-Men to the Avengers takes away the unique idea of the Avengers. If I was running this show, I would've just had the major Marvel hero teams (ALL of them, Avengers, FF, X-Men) set up a big network-like structure, like on Justice League Unlimited. AND I would've had a free one-shot published every year that helped people (new and old readers, young and old readers) keep up with what's going on in the Marvel Universe--I even have the perfect name for it: Marvel Yearbook. THAT would've been the best way--not all this redressing and reshuffling of characters and creative teams. That, and I would've gotten rid of New and Secret Avengers (I kept Avengers Academy because, despite being a modern comic, I like the idea)--I just think those two teams are too much. I'm a devotee of the DCAU and MAU, and to me, there is no New Avengers, no Mighty Avengers, no Secret Avengers, JUST Avengers. Same thing with the Justice League--International, Elite, Dark, of America, and Task Force are fine for the realm of comics, but when I'm around, it's just plain, good old Justice League.

As for being the wrong approach. Well, you're wrong, because it's the right approach. Hickman has been excellent in Fatanstic Four, so his Avengers run shall be great as well. Slick, you are overeacting.

And Time Travel isn't new to comics slick. Time travel stories have always been a part of comics. Seriously, calm down.

@Darkmount1: And what makes you think this hasn't been intricately planned? I mean it seems to me like this has been in motion since before avx (hence the reason for avx in the first place) meaning they've had at least a few months to plan it out. I highly doubt marvel would do such a big relaunch without thinking it through

@Jodez: What would be the point of waiting? To fully iron out any kinks in the relaunch! The heck with the retreats editorial has them go through, they need to go through every inch of the ideas and make sure, I don't know, something doesn't contradict the other, will one thing be well-received vs. hated, etc. Things like this should be intricately planned so that it doesn't 'explode' upon implementation.

@Darkmount1: Well when would you have liked them to do it? By the time this launches it will have been more than a year since the new 52, and like I said it's spining off from avx so it makes perfect sense for it to launch so closely. What would be the point of waiting?

Okay i get that it sucks when a title gets cancelled, i'd hate it if some of my faves gets the boot but that's not gonna stop me from enjoying some of the 20 new titles. Hell I'd even go so far as to say this relaunch has me excited for things to come in the marvel department.

and as for the timing, most of the relaunch is spining out of avx so obviously it's gonna happen at the end of avx (or towards the end, not really sure on the dates).

I understand that you are upset about this relaunch. I feel that Marvel is really just trying to get some money but (Like almost everything else), but I think that this could be your chance to see how one of the main two publishing companies can be enjoyable.
Get only one, the one that you think sounds the coolest. Read it and then, if you hate it, I understand, but what if you like it?
What if it gets you back into the Marvel Universe??

I don't like Marvel but I think I'm going to try out a few series because I want to like it.

Plus, there has been some very good comics since 9/11.I only read DC and I've enjoyed a lot of comics since 9/11. Sure they aren't all happy but there are a few that are pretty optimistic,

I can understand your upset over this as it certainly doesn't seem like the best idea to me either, but It hardly seems as bad as the New 52. "Seems" being a key word as who knows where it will really go. But they made a definite point in reference to the DCnU by saying that this wasn't a reboot and they weren't throwing their history out the window. That's why, at least for now, I will hold out some hope for this not being as big a mistake as DC's reboot was.

@ZombieBigfoot: Brilliant they may be (according to people I've talked to), but still--they occupy a niche that shouldn't have spread to the rest of the comics. Spider-Man comics do have dire situations, but they don't HAVE to be all the time! On all the Marvel NOW! covers I've seen so far each character conveys the same thing to me: a Dirty Harry-era Clint Eastwood-esque demeanor. It's, it's....just dumb.

Oy, if only it would take just four words to get Brevoort, Loeb, Quesada, and Alonso to reconsider:

@Darkmount1: I'm optimistic about the Hawkeye book.. but I've heard bad things about Defenders. I think something about it being boring. Dunno, didn't have much interest in the title myself. Also, I disagree. Winter Soldier, Rucka's Punisher run, and Remender's run on Venom are all brilliant.

@frozenedge: They confirmed that they wouldn't be messing with continuity, but still--events and initiatives like these (and those of the past couple of years) have been popping in the instant one of them finishes. It's exhausting, comics shouldn't be released that fast-paced! Where's the moderation, I ask you!

@ZombieBigfoot: Easy to do--up till last year I have almost NEVER bought any modern Big Two comics (except Incredible Hulk #600, the Obama cover Spider-Man issue, Amazing Spider-Man #607, and a couple of other exceptions). As stated earlier, I am only giving one modern Marvel title a shot: Matt Fraction's Defenders (and quite possibly the Hawkeye book he's working on). But as for the rest of Marvel/DC comics post-2008--THEY'RE HORRIBLY, UNBELIEVABLY......boring. It's like every book post 9/11 got the life sucked out of it, and I think it's terrible. There's no escapism, no optimism, no flights of fancy. It's depressing.

Honestly as long as it doesn't restart the entire universe like New 52 did, i'm okay with this. For some reason, I don't think a whole reboot like the New 52 would work well with Marvel.

I don't even understand why you're mad...we've got a synopsis of 4 of the 20 books that they're doing over the 5 months of the revamp....so in the long run you know absolutely nothing about it....you're acting just like a stereotypical, jumping the gun, overreacting comic book reader

When it comes to loosing a favorite new, non-AAA, book, I think we all can feel your pain but if there's anything I've learned over the last couple years is that you just gotta enjoy them while they're here. Do whatever you can to promote your favorite book, but don't hold your breath.

In regards to Marvel Now, I don't think it's as bad as you think, besides we don't know everything about it yet. Unlike the DC relaunch - which is starting almost from scratch - Marvel just did this

  1. Take 616 continuity
  2. Shake it up, literally as in reality itself it seems
  3. Wait and open in October.

It's like they said "continuity will not be rebooted' just given a facelift. Hopefully the character won't change too much.

But if they ruin my Cap I'll be drinking the Haterade with ya.

@Dernman: EXACTLY!! It's time 'stunts' were retired. I tell you, if I'd taken charge, I would've made a whole deal of sweeping changes--one of which would be the placing of event books 'on probation'. By benching those for a while, I'd shift the focus to storytelling, not blockbuster storytelling.

There was plenty to be upset about with new 52. But also a lot that got me excited. I feel the same about this. Mostly I'm just happy to have Hickman and Remender on the Avengers titles. It's been so long since I've been able to enjoy the Avengers comics.

@Dernman: Slight problem with that logic--it may be 'new', but it's been done before.

If Defenders gets cancelled because of this, and the new Hawkeye isn't to my fancy because it gets entrenched in this, then the only modern comics I'm reading are all IDW: Trio, Godzilla by Duane Scwyrzinski (whatever it's supposed to be spelled), Transformers: ReGeneration One, G.I. Joe by Larry Hama, and hopefully Ghostbusters.

Do you value INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS and PERSONAL TURMOIL, though? It's as much a book about human survival, what people will do to survive and how they change due to circumstance as it is about hacking and killing zombies.
