Why I love the Vine

I really love Comicvine. I just love it. The wikis. The easily navigation on the site. But what I like the most the people. The people on this site who comment on this site are the best. Even if you have a diferent opinion people here still respect yours. I have been on ComicBookResources and I get attacked when I comment. Now I dont know how many of you are on CBR but I just can stand it.

Never heard of ComicBookResources, but by your review I do not think I'll be venturing there anytime soon.

Uh... thanks and you're welcome, I guess. Sure, why not?

I give respect when respect is earned; that's generally how I conduct myself.

I might be a member of CBR, but if I am I have, like, 5 posts max. I think I joined yeeeears ago.

Really? I never go there but I see ads for it all the time. I remember them at NYCC last year.

This is my first time hearing/reading about it.

Congrats on not being harassed on the internet.

OPs right. CBR is quite a hostile place. Granted the Vine is not so innocent either, at least a lot of "arrogant" debaters here know their stuff. And the ones who really know their stuff are not swellheads. Too bad some of them have to leave. But yeah, a lot of CBR "know-it-alls" are quite dumb*sses and don't really know what they're talking about.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the site! It does have it fair share of trolls and pricks though, but all in all its one of the better online communities ive been a member off.

Yeah I don't have any real compliants about this place in couple of months I have been here.

Pretty decent crowd though I don't really venture to the battle forums.

Posted by pooty

I have been here about 4yrs. I started in the battle forum and enjoyed it very much. It can get intense. But I loved it. The only reason I barely visit is because the battles got stale. But off-topic has the best debates. Everyone is either passive aggressive or sarcastic. LOVE IT!!!

Nah we're all passive aggressive assholes trust me.

Only if he's an alt. I was a perfectly polite gentleman until CV gotta hold of me. Now I have a slight mean streak from where some of our touched users have violated my sanity, peace of mind and good standing with people online.

Posted by akbogert

I might have anticipated this thread being sarcastic, but the CBR part really wouldn't fit with that.

Frankly, I joined CV because I was looking for a place to vent about Avengers Arena. I met some pushback (as of course I would), but by and large I am so glad I joined CV instead of CBR, because yeah, what I read over there in the comments (especially about Arena) just really rubs me the wrong way. There are of course trolls and insensitive tools (as well as people too young to realize they fall in those categories, who will eventually grow out of it), but I'd agree: there are some very awesome people here, and if you show their opinions courtesy you will receive it back in spades.

I joined this site knowing very little about most comics; if it weren't for the community, I wouldn't have been here very long.

Posted by Blood1991

@akbogert: Daaaw you're one of us now. Seems like just yesterday you were at twenty post blogging about Avengers Arena and being all polite to everyone's bullsh!t.

@Blood1991: Haha. It's funny, I'm like "I joined January 9th" and people are like "wait, you used to not be here?" Well...that, and "everything that ever happened happened without you."

True. People can be slow to warm up to you when you first join especially if you say something stupid or have an AV of a character that has waaaay to many rapid fans here already. Otherwise most people are alright once you get to know them.

I respect a man with Zero as his avatar and Jedi as his name. He is one to be reckoned with.

No one responded to any of my posts for the first two months I was on here.

@Blood1991: True. I think certain pitfalls do exist like a new user comes on has a Batman avy and only debates for Batman, no matter what. Or someone has a thousand posts but has never changed the default avy. You do need to expand into certain forums and then you get a bit more recognition. People on here aren't here to be assholes. We don't come on and go "Oh yeaaaah....fresh meat.." and lick our chomps and tear into the poor person. Everyone here is pretty chill but we can be the aforementioned a holes if need be or some of the coolest people you'll ever know. I know some users come across as hardasses though but even then they don't do it either. CV is chill but once you work up to people, yeah, you do pretty good for yourself.

I'm always afraid of changing my avatar, like I'll be letting someone down when they fail to recognize me. Heh. As if.

Hey , sorry (not sorry) for hijacking your thread, btw. I read CBR stuff all the time...then talk about it over here.

Agreed. Even people who are total hardasses or troll people constantly are usually really nice people once you get to know them, and even people you don't have much in common with as far as what you read are awesome if you branch out into forums you may not be comfortable with.

@akbogert: Yes being a knight of the courts certainly helps me keep track of a high profile King as yourself :p

You do just fine for yourself. I wish I had half the cred you do at 1000 post.

Posted by akbogert

@Blood1991: Do I have "cred?" Haha.

Whatever providence I have is mostly due to having gotten it wrong the first time around in other online communities. I joined my first -- that is, I really tried to become an active part of an online community for the first time -- when I was 15. I managed to actually get myself banned. Then rehabilitated back in. Some of my closest online relationships are now with people who hated me when I started out. I think between having so many years of community experience elsewhere and just in general being older than a lot of folks here (though obviously that's a generalization), I may just come across as sager than I actually am. I've made the rookie mistakes often enough that I think I've avoided them for the most part here ^_^

Posted by Blood1991

@akbogert: Yes you have cred. This was my first attempt at a forum so I had NO idea what I was doing. I just sort of went with it and when I had something to say I said it. Sometimes that backfires, but I have never felt that anyone here was trying to be better than me here and when dealing with comic geeks there often can be an elitist attitude that thankfully most users here do not have.

Being bred in the battle forums was kind of similar. Except I was called noob or newbie. Or ignored for awhile. But then I got good, better, and branched out in the forums and made some good friends. Then I went back to the battle forums, hall of famed, best, crowned champion, modded. I think every user kind of undergoes an evolution of sorts on this site. And with it people reciprocate conversation.

You are the epitome of Viner success. I agree we all change and grow as viners, and as people. It seems strange, but we are all shaping each other as we type and go about our mundane discussions. Odd to think someone you have never met influenced you from miles and miles away.

Posted by akbogert

@god_spawn: I remain terrified of the Battle boards. I have some friends who ask me to come in and vote and I'm always worried I'm going to get torn to shreds the moment I walk through the door, haha.

Perhaps one day...

@Blood1991: Yeah, that sense of elitism is something I'd like to study sometime in the next couple years, should I have the opportunity. For a culture (comic readers and gamers, anyway) which is supposedly comprised of the people who were rejected and mocked and thus should understand better than anyone the importance of acceptance and encouragement, we have far too many jerks in our ranks, and seek to keep people out more frequently than we let them in. As a relatively new reader I'm proof that it's possible to get through with minimal hazing, but then I'm a nerdy white male, so that proves very little.

Posted by Blood1991

@akbogert: I always figured it was a protective mechanism in the mind. Only let in people you know won't hurt you. So they make this incredibly high standard of person and shut themselves away from everyone else, because at some point in their life it seemed everyone was out to hurt them.

Posted by God_Spawn

@Blood1991: Agreed.

@akbogert: You have a thousand posts already so by that factor alone people might just leave you alone or treat you better. Otherwise, yeah, we are like sharks in there sometimes. 1 drop of blood in the water and the next thing you know you're swarmed. Fresh meat is always welcomed in the battle forums.

Moderator
Posted by akbogert

@Blood1991: That makes sense on a personal level, but culturally? I don't know. It just seems like people who know intimately the pain of being kept out from something they want to be a part of would know better than to do the same to others. *shrug* This too shall pass.

@god_spawn: I'm sure it is. *runs far, far away*
