Decisions from the past 0

Continuing this epic reunion of the Invaders, Ross and Cage write about a crime from the past committed by the originals Invaders, back in the year of 1945. In order to stop the mad plans of Arnin Zola, Captain America and his coleagues have to eliminate a whole village in the Netherlands that have being innoculated with a mutating virus, that eliminate everything that makes human a rational being, leaving only rage and the desire to infect others instead. Putting such a moral decision in the ha...

Stepping up 0

The mystical theme was present in New Avengers since Dr. Strange joined the team (during Civil War when the team gone rogue and underground), so it´s only natural that the first arc story of this new volume would be about the supernatural and magic. The only problem is that Bendis can´t hold together all the details in this 6 issue story and the narrative becomes slow, a little boring and confusing (just to ilustrate in the end of issue # 4 Iron Fist just knocked Dr. Strange and in issue # 5 the...

Wine and Flames 0

Imagine having to avoid being killed by  your own son. Then try to see yourself  teaming up with this same progeny in order to destroy a empire. After that you have to picture an old aged guy removing this son´s essence. What could come up from that? Revenge! And that´s what this excellent, interesting and entertaining comic book is all about: Daken´s revenge from Wolverine, who has stopped him from becoming Romulus´heir and for breaking his muramasa´s claws. This is a story about a man so fille...

A tale about Asgard, Yggdrasil, Aliens and Soup 0

The world of Thor has some constants: his father Odin, his brother Loki, the World Tree Yggdrasil, his value friends (and brother) Balder, Vollstagg and Heimdall and, of course, Asgard and Ragnarok. And since Asgard was removed to Earth (to the city of Broxton) the balance of things has shattered. This is the foundation of the story: Asgard should´t be on Earth, because something will take it´s place where it should be. And this something is aliens invasion. A whole fleet leaded by a vicious and...

Give me a quick death 0

It´s the brink of destruction for our universe as a group of heroes, teamed up with several galactic entities and aliens (Shiar, Badoon, Kree) just can´t hold the breach no longer, since Mar-vell´s army is very big and powerful (they even have a Galactus´head that is causing all kinds of trouble). In the other side - the Cancerverse - Peter Quill and the Guardians, along with Thanos, engage in battle with the Revengers, in a most (un)predictable outcome: the betrayal of Thanos. This book is very...

"The Hulks are running the show" 0

Greg Pak continues to bring a fascinant, entertaining and interesting story about the Incredible Hulks (Hulk, Skaar, A Bomb, She Hulk, Red She-Hulk, Korg and Hiro-Kala), focusing now on how Banner plans to intercept the planet K´ai from it´s crashing route with Earth. For that he has to get his old ship back (yes, the one he fled from Saakar and terrorized Manhattan) in Cape Canaveral and who´s there: Steve Rogers´Secret Avengers. Greg Pak shows us a good fight without boring dialogues and just ...

Into the monster´s belly 0

This is a book for those who enjoy indie and ironic themes, full of mature content and yet laughable and based on mythical creatures. James Stokoe is a very versatile artist (he´s the writer, penciler, inker, colorer and letterer) and his characters represents anger, revenge, power, lust, greed and a myriad of the human spectre of feelings. In the skin of One Eye and his adventures we are carried away with these feelings and end up having lots of fun with interesting dialogues, creative characte...

Warming up or Sometimes it´s good to be Thor´s friend 0

The Story - While Thor battles Hella, Tony Stasrk is struggling for his life as he tries to convince Fafnir and all the ogres that is a bad idea sacrificing him, since he´s Thor´s pal - and judging by all the thunder and lightinings, the Odinson is back. Since Steve Rogers is a man of action, he does not wait for the dragon to come to his senses and rescues Tony - that was ambushed and waiting to become barbecue. Our heroes are strayed in one of the nine realms and they don´t have a clue who´s r...

God´s sun 0

The Story - After revealing himself, Leonardo da Vinci asks Leonid to fear Isaac Newton and to find the truth: he´s to set free Nostradamus, then he leaves again to become Earth´s first man in space with a special mission: "giving birth" to a baby Celestial that is being nursed in the sun. The Writing- This is a mini series totally different from Marvel standarts: there´s sci fi with history and a intense cross reference with stuff that really happened. Like the fact that lying in the center of...

Psychiatry and Mythology 0

The Story - Ragnarok is coming and it´s up to Thor, with the help of Donald Blake, Balder and Loki?? to stop the unavoidable, to stop destiny itself. And connected to this all, a search of the Nazi back in 1939 for a secret and ultimate weapon that is stored in Asgard. The Writing - Hickman gets the credit for making an interesting comic book that uses a lot of concepts and ideas: technology, mithology, war and brotherhood. The whole Nazi story thing, it it was in other book, maybe it would be ...

"This is not the X-Men" 0

The Story - Following leads for over a year, Deapool discovers that En Sabah Nur is alive, so the new X-Force go into their first mission: break in the monster´s spaceship and stop his plans. The Writing - Finally I´ve found someone that made me laugh about Wade Wilson (I´m not a big fan of Deadpool). Remender really captured what Wilson is all about with great jokes and lines (and the merc with the mouth is still in character). Having Betsy and Warren together was a cool idea, specially when ...

Faces of the Past 0

The Story - As Logan´s soul is trapped in hell and he is being subject to all kind of tortures from the Devil himself, Mistique and Melita Garner are trying to get some help for Logan: they´ve tried Yukio, but didn´t work so well for her, so in an unexpected way enter the Ghost Riders (Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze) with Satan´s son himself, Daimon Hellstorm. That should do it. And in hell Puck has allied himself with a mysterious person to help Logan too. The Writing - By far this is the best w...

The return of the Lord of the Olympus 0

The Story - The Chaos King, a japanese god (named Amatsu-Mikaboshi), has risen to take what´s his for natural right: he wants back the whole existence, to bring everything to an end, and annihilate all gods, myths and it´s up for Earth´s heroes, leaded by the Prince of Power (Hercules), to stop this madness. The Writing - There are some strong and weak points in this first issue and I´ll try to name them A) Strong points - 1) I think that Pak and Van Lente´s aproach with Hercules and Amadeus C...

A Miracle 0

The Story - In the search of the third light, Storm and Hope travel to Nigeria to track down Idie Okonkwo, a 12 year old girl who´s having trouble with her recent powers: fire and ice. Meanwhile there are some background stories involving Ice Man, Sebastian Shaw, Namor, Emma Frost and Kitty Pride, and how the last is going to team up with the White Queen to solve her problems. The Writing - This was a much better issue from the perpective of the story and character development. Ororo is a godde...

Who´s Max Fury? 0

The Story - After Steve Roger´s black ops team first mission on Mars, the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D (Steve) confronts Nick Fury about who was the man running the show in name of the Shadow Council that looks exactly like the ex director of S.H.I.E.L.D. The Writing - This was a much better issue in terms of writing and story, I guess this kind of material suits Brubaker´s style much more than issues # 1 to 4, so that was an easy read. The origin of Max Fury was way better than I would thought,...

Have at thee!!! Bendis says to us 0

The Story - Earth is on the brink of destruction both in the present and in the future and the Avengers must trust their guts if they´re thinking they can prevent this annihilation from happening. The Writing - If you enjoy time travels and confusing dialogues this is the issue for you. I´m not sure if Bendis is the most apropriate candidate for this kind of material (time travel), I think other writers can handle this theme easily than him, but the fact is this story arc isn´t evolving as I´d ...

Valeria is a naughty girl 0

The Story - While the FF are dealing with some cosmic event in the "Neutral Zone", Valeria Richards finds out about the "Bridge" and how his father is planning on solving world´s every problem (the 101 ideas), while Dr. Doom is in deep grief ´cause of his condition after being held by the Intelligencia (check World War Hulks in Incredible Hulk # 606 - 610). The Good - It´s amazing art (pencils and inks by Eteve Epting and colors by Paul Mounts) with briliant writing (by Mr. Jonathan Hickman). T...

Scott, consumed by guilt, tries to show Laura that there´re other ways, but everything appears to lead to killing for X-23. The Writing - This was an interesting book,´cause it´s all about dialogues. Who´s the biggest monster? 0

Two stories, two reviews. 1st Story - Dark Son - Chapter Three - K´Ai The Story - The worldmind has lured Hiro-Kala into the depths of K´Ai, in an attempt to convince the dark son to use his old power once again and become one with his world (Jarella´s) that now he´s the savior (just like Hulk was). The Good - Greg Pak and Scott Reed´s narrative is very solid, it has a straight fowardness way of telling the story, using past images without the boredom of the eternal spiral of some tales (like...

Bucky´s true nature 0

Ed Brubaker run in Captain America is probably his best work and I dare say it´s the best writing of the spangled heroe ever. The Story - It´s the final strike of Zemo´s against Bucky, who was not content in dropping our heroe in mid air to fall in a rocky shore with raging waters, just showed to us a little of his twisted mind (and a little like an oxymoron): he has leaded Bucky towards the same island where he was presumably dead, trying to disable the bomb in the airplane. Stripped of his sh...

The best there is 0

The Story - It´s the conclusion of this limited series, where Logan helps Domino to get away from the Assassin´s Guild and The Hand, for stealing over U$ 200 mil from Bella Donna, who´s a little upset about it. In the most western scenario, both Logan and Domino enter the Assassin´s Guild  territory to make an offer: "Leave us or die. And the Money goes to charity". it´s a typical plan from Logan: if a brawl is imminent, don´t try to avoid it, but always have an ace in the hole. There´s blood, v...

A fashion way to start things 0

The Good - This issue was a good read, ´cause Marjorie and Daniel used concepts that are commom to us, like Daken´s ambiguos sexual behavior (dating women and men, just to achieve his goals), his desire for tasty and quality things, the dillema of killing his father (like in the beggining of the book) and the fact that he is looking for power. This initiative of lurking out of Romulus´and Logan´s shadows, in an attempt to create his own, is a very good premise. It´s also a good read because of t...

We gotta take DD down 0

The Story - As Foggy and Dakota are fighting for their lives, running from ninjas, New York City falls victim of the veil of madness that has possessed Daredevil and now his friends, advised by Kingpin himself, find no other solution than to take Matt down for good. The Good - This was one of the best Shadowland tie-ins story, ´cause there´s an awesome mix of good writing, strong dialogues, nice amount of action, beautifull art (pencils and colors) and some answers of what is going on with our ...

"Who does this belong to?" 0

The Story - After a nearly endless battle with spawns from another dimension, the New Avengers cacthes a break with Iron Fist´s return (as a White Lantern??), who´s blaming Strange for all of this mess and appears to be on Ancient One´s side. The Good - In a short comment, only Immonen´s art is responsible for me buying this book, and even his art is not going to be a reason strong enough if this series doesn´t shift 180º. The cover was beautiful. Jessica acting as a heroine was ok too. The Baa...

The Invaders are...Rudolf the rein? 0

The Story - A mysterious virus that mutates his victims into senselless monsters is the reason of the Invader´s reunion, who are grouped together by The Golden Age Vision. The Good 1) Characters - I´m not familiar with the Invaders group, I´m not really into Golden and Silver Age, and the reason I´ve picked this book was Caio Reis, a fellow countryman, and to find out a little about this heroes from the 40s. Meanwhile the rest of the Avengers (Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Thor and Hawkeye, with Maria Hill) stay behind and watch astouned the Big Apple being invaded by Martians, dinos and Killraven. Where´s Matt Murdock 0

The Story - In this issue we get some hints that: A) Matt Murdock has been replaced by someone ele or B) Matt Murdock has been fooled by the Hand´s elders and now he is going to become the vessel for their Beast. Either way DD as we known is no more: he´d authorized his ninjas to kill and murder his friends. The Writing - I´m not enjoying Moonknight´s participation in all this - ok, I guess Diggle has an important role reserved for him, that´s why he´s spying on Murdock; I´m not enjoying at all...

A lot of questions 0

The Story - So this is a new arc in Logan´s life, despite the fact that he´d been to hell one time and aparently, Devil himself misses him and sees  Wolverine as a source of amusement and fun, since he´s a little bored. What will this represent in Logan´s life? How did he go to Hell to begin with? How he´s coming back? Who are these new villains? A lot of questions. The Writing - This book begins with a deep/true/sincere conversation between Logan and Wraith (who´s now a pastor) about past, inne...

Avengers Assemble and Stand down troops 0

The Story - It´s the conclusion of the saga: Heroes against Heroes;´Nuff Said!! The Writing - Millar closes this event with a golden key: an excellent battle scenario (for instance Dagger and Panther trying to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.´s systems and failing in doing so, asking Cloak to teleport everybody to Manhattan), with funny dialogues (like Spider-Man kicking ass and Reed Richards saying: Amazing and Peter saying: Spectacular); again Spider to Iron Man this time: "I´m all ticked off and I br...

The first casualtie of war or Register this Iron Man 0

The Story - In the middle of battle comes Thor (or at least we think so) and he quickly shifts the balance of the game, and it would be victory for the Registration Group if Hercules didn´t crash on Iron Man, allowing Captain America´s Secret Avengers to escape, lick their wounds and prepare for the next battle. Things aren´t as simple and black and white as they were in the beggnining of this saga, since Goliath was killed by Ragnarok (Thor´s clone made by Hank and Reed), heroes are starting to...

Cap´s Secret Avengers 0

The Story - The Registration Act is a reality and Tony Stark is after allies, so he goes in a meeting with Emma Frost, who shows him a little unninsterest about the Anti-registration group, saying that mutants should only be left alone. Dr. Strange and Black Panther turn down a proposition to lead the Initiative and we get to see the first confrontation between Iron Man and Captain America with thunderous outcomes. My name is Peter Parker and I´ve been SM since I was 15 years old 0

The Story - The Registration Act becomes law and S.H.I.E.L.D., leaded by Iro Man, sends groups to capture heroes that don´t obey it, like the Young Avengers, but they´re soon rescued by Captain America, who´s forming a resistance, supported by Nick Fury. The Writing - Millar develops a little more of both antagonic ideas in this conflict: 1) Iron Man trying to convince everybody that the Registration Act is the right thing to do (just after defeating Doombot) and 2) Captain America arguing that...

"Justice for Damien" 0

The Story - It´s a new era for Marvel Heroes since the disaster that happened in Stamford,´cause normal people now wants the government on the super heroes as well that those get proper training and licenses to work. Will this politics from Washington be a good or bad thing for the heroes community? The Concept - Mark Millar is a great writer, perhaps one of the top five in this industry, and this story arc of him is a stone mark, is an event so big that rupture Marvel´s foundations and, I dare...

The Speed of Light 0

The Story - It´s the Five Lights episode two, where Hope continues to find and calm down the new mutants - this time is Gabriel Cohuelo (a very powerful mutant in my opinion - he´s faster than Quicksilver). The Good - In this issue I think Fraction removed Hope from the center lights and arranged more space and time for other characters (like Psylocke, Emma Frost, Colossus, Kitty Pride, Logan); the new mutant story was ok, interesting, I´m curious to know the real extent of his powers. Logan an...

The final showdown 0

The Story - It´s the conclusion of World War Hulks, as General "Thunderbolt" Ross a.k.a Red Hulk tangles for the last time with Bruce Banner a.k.a Green and Only Hulk - the strongest there is. The Good - It´s very nice to see a Hulk totally merged and dominated by Bruce Banner, not the beast, the raging Hulk, but an inteligent and strategist mind behind all this muscles. Not even in the Peter David/Dale Keown and Gary Frank era (when the Thulk was tagging along with the Pantheon) was Bruce Bann...
