Something I often do--which is no doubt a waste of time and yet I cannot help doing it--is to consider how a game of my favourite character or team would be. This time around, I'm going to go with..
I've only recently finished reading the Thunderbolts: Cage TPB, and I am well and truly hooked on the title. I love the characters, I love the story, and I love the art. So as I mentioned above, my thoughts inevitably turned to a video game adaptation, and here's what I came up with:
Who, Where, and When?
I would use the current roster of Thunderbolts, not only because they are my favourite, but because they are the ones current readers will associate with, and therefore be more likely to buy the game. It would be cool if previous rosters and missions were available as DLCs, but that's digressing.
You would start as Luke Cage, jumping down to The Raft. Upon landing, as per the comic, you would have to meet up with Fixer, Songbird, Mach-V, and then Man-Thing. This would lead you around The Raft, teaching you the basic controls such as walking, running, looking around, and using things such as door controls.
You would then have to meet the Ghost. Juggernaut, Moonstone, and Crossbones in their respective cells. It would be a cool Easter Egg to include other well-known villains in the cells you pass on the way, possibly even allowing a simple dialogue with them. Once you've been introduced to each team member, the tutorial phase would be over and you'd be into the game proper.
The game would be mission-based, along the lines of Mass Effect. The Raft could be traversed at will (as Luke) in between missions, and you would enter Warden Walker's office when you are ready to take a new one. Each of your team could also be selected for training within The Raft, but would be limited to their respective training room. This would provide tutorials for their specific powers. Some of the missions would be story-based, taken from the book, but most would simply be provided for the sake of raising XP and possibly collecting various items. I'm not sure how the game would end, however, as the series itself is still on-going.
At the beginning of each mission, you would choose which character you want to play as (though Man-Thing is non-playable). All the others will either be AI controlled, or another player via co-op mode. The game would be third-person like Batman: Arkham Asylum, where you're looking over the character's shoulder. The missions would be relatively linear, though large "arenas" would be needed for Juggernaut to get a good run-up.
Each character, due to their varying skill sets, will have different functions. For instance, if a computer needs to be hacked, then Ghost would step up, or if something big needs to be smashed, then Juggernaut will have to.
In single player mode, the mission will be over if the player dies, but whilst in co-op, the other human players will have a chance to revive you. If they don't get to you in time, however, the mission will end. All the AI characters, if knocked unconscious, will simply revive after a certain time.
