The issue is, the OCs are fantastic but the explanations, continuity and plotholes are pretty bad. Hopeless shows some talent but the book reeks of a lack of research on several characters and such.
Also what he is doing with Hazmat and Reptil is ATROCIOUS! He stripped away all there personality. Hazmat to make Bloodstone look better. Reptil no idea. People who followed Academy should be pissed. He has turned Hazmat from the caring cynic to a total unsympathetic character and made Reptil lose what defined him, his knowledge of superheroes since he was a super hero geek first and foremost.
Where are the jokes from Reptil? Where is Hazmat's cynicism or grief for Mettle? NOWHERE.
His new characters are fantastic. But his Hazmat and Reptil are nothing like who they are.
Avengers Academy was not cancelled due to sales. It was in the perfect range of cult following. And Arena sales are already at lower end Academy sales. Hazmat, Mettle, Reptil and X-23 have all been inconsistent with there past character growth.
Hopeless does good characterization of Cammi and the new kids and the Runaways but his story and pacing and characterization of the older characters have been god awful. Cable and the X-Force people already don't care about and this book is headed towards the same direction.
I read one argument and laughed. These character have no potential to be revived and the deaths are meaningless. Also read another, and saw people unfamiliar with Mettle's character. That line from Mettle was nothing like him. He showed more heroism during the tie ins to FI which were actually good.
And yes I have read all three issues at the store.
@mxl23: The reason some people are lashing out at X-23 fans is the fact that they have been saying I hope the rest dies and X-23 lives. Things like that can be seen as troubling and disrespectful to other fans.
