It's all in the Character moments 0

Soap Box: Well the first 5 issues of this relaunched JLI series have, in my opinion, ranged from not good to ok. I fully expected after this issue to be my last. However, Jurgens and crew (fill in artist Marco Castiello)hooked me finally. So one more arc has been ordered and I am hopeful for the first time since the relaunch. The Good: As my title suggests it is the character moments that make this issue strong. From Booster and Batman to Godiva and General at Iron these interaction fee...

The Story:   FLASH FACT: Subject Zero. Subject One. There can only be one.      Neil Sinclair is no more. His transformation into Subject Zero has destroyed his former self and turned him entirely into a merciless warrior with an unquenchable thirst for power and vengeance. As he sets out to destroy all meta-humans who pose as threats to his dominance, it’ll be up to Kal to protect Lois from this monster seeking to exact revenge on the Lane family. But when Subject Zero tracks them down and th...

They will always be together 0

The story:  Earth has fallen. The multiple Doomsdays have defeated Supergirl, Superboy, Steel, and the Eradicator. Now it all comes down to a weakened Superman versus the monster known as Doomslayer in this, the epic finale of "Reign of the Doomsdays"!   My Soap Box:  I have been reading Action Comics for years and really enjoyed Paul Cornell's "superman less" start on the book and couldn't wait to see what he could do with the Man of Steel in the book.  Well with the closing of the DCU and th...

All is not as it appears 2

Plot Summary:  Eclipso is triumphant! He has defeated the world's greatest heroes, destroyed the moon and spit in the face of the greatest forces in the universe.  But one JLAer still stands.  Can she make things right?  Soap box:   Here we are in the closing months of the Robinson run on JLA.  It has been a wild ride.  Not all have liked it.  I have enjoyed most but not all issues.  However, once Mark Bagely departed I enjoyed the book much more.  The visuals under Brett Booth and now Daniel Sa...

The sky is falling 0

THE STORY:  The moon has been split in half and the sky is falling on the earth.  Our team begins its final battle to save the moon and hopefully the earth but Eclipso and his Shadow army stand in the way!  Donna Troy is the linch pin to victory for the team.  Can she defeat Eclipso and help the team save us all?   I'm not going to tell you that but if you want to know buy this issue!  THE REVIEW:  The addition of Brett Booth was a welcome one.  He replaced possibly the worst JLA artist, in my o...

Magic is its own undoing 0

The Story: Superman must help the JLA of the future – Aquaman, Klarion the Warlock, Traci 13, Stanley and His Monster, Scream Queen and Jason Blood – in preventing Morgaine le Fey from traveling back in time to our era and destroying the sun! But Batman insists that you can't change the past, and, well, Batman is kind of always right, so . . . hello, eternal darkness? Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and ChrisCross bring "Sorcerer Kings" to a sun-shattering conclusion!   The Review: Cullen Bun...

The plot:  Superboy wakes up to a world that is at its end or is it? The Review:  Well after last months side step into the Reign Of Doomsday crossover we are back to the Superboy that Jeff Lemire has been developing since the start of his run.  Connor seemingly wakes up in a world that has been or is in the process of being destroyed.  He is to blame...How did this happen?  At first I thought I missed an issue when flipped through the book in line at my LCS but upon reading it, all is explaine...

Hell is for...well the Six 2

The Story:  The conclusion to the Secret Six's visit to hell.  Who will win the day?  Who will get the card?  Will Doll get married?  The review:  In true Gail Simone fashion the conclusion to this arc arrives with some very interesting plot threads hanging out there.  We have Thomas, Catman, meeting up with his father which is resolved in a fittingly twisted and horrible way.  We have the main struggle between the Hell prince Ragdoll and his minions vs The Six led by Scandal. This is resolved t...

Waste not want not 0

The Story:Jonah is dealing with some very bad weather and finds his way to a little frozen town that is on the brink. The Review:First off lets start with great cover by one of my favorite female artists, Fiona Staples.  It gives you all that is needed to set the tone for what is to follow.  The bleek white back ground with Mr Hex and a bit of blood.  Perfect opening to the fine issue.  The tone of that cover converts into a creeping tale of what a shrinking group of people do when they are cut o...

Old differences 0

The Story: Part three of the War of the Green Lanters.  Hal and Guy will fight!    The Review: Peter Tomasi is charged with writing this chapter of "War"and he does with his own style.  We have the same mental/ring shockwave of the impurities retun to the Green.  Much like the last chapter Guy and Hal are not affected.  Or should I say seemingly so.  Well in the least the effect is delayed.  The ensueing pages featuer a recap of the difference between Guy and Hal's approach to being a Lantern.  ...

The Story:  James Gordon Jr and and old case haunt Commisioner Gordon.  Are they connected?  Could this be a nightmare realized?  You'll have to read the issue to find out!  The Review: Scott Synder has crashed onto the comic book scene in an amazing way!  American Vampire launched with the help of none other than Steven King himself.  Then he lands in Gotham writing one DC's longest running series (no funny business the adding up canceled series) and has truly left a mark on the Batverse.  The ...

Mr. Not So Terrific 0

Plot Summary: Dr. Chaos Comes to town just in time to destroy monument Point before the Justice Society of America can completely rebuild it. Plus, Blue Devil pitches in!    The Review:  Well I will say one thing this book and series thus far, under the direction of Marc Guggenheim, has been kind of faster paced and action filled.  However, I can't pin point a feeling that just keeps me from loving this book.  No, it's not the team, which I love.   No, it's the art, Kolins I love too!  So I re...

The Story: It's just another day at Smallville High – girl trouble psychic attacks, gym class, lunch with Kid Flash, study hall and alien terrorists from the future!    The Review: Jeff Lemire's Superboy continues to develop into one of my favorite books, along with his Sweet Tooth, every month.  The developments in this issue have the story moving along well.  Not so break neck as the last issue, which is appreciated.  That is not to say the story was slow and full of down time that is wasn't. ...

Wow!  My first review in weeks and it is the first of the New Year to boot!    The Story: Jonah Hex has dealt with some wicked, vile people in his time, but never has he met someone who managed to get under his skin quite like the bandit known as Loco. Most bounties don't upset Hex, but this time, as they say, it's personal. The story: The Rogue Profile issues return as BRIGHTEST DAY zips on with a spotlight turned toward the resurrected Captain Boomerang! He knows why he's back and what he needs to do. But does he still have what it takes to be a Rogue?      Well first off I have to say that I have enjoyed every issue of this series thus far.  Most rank between a 4 and a 4.5   Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul are a perfect team for Barry Allen Flash.  However, this issue we have Scott Kolins joining for some Flash ...

The story: The hunt is on for the second artifact! But in order to find it, the team will be thrown into the most dangerous trap of all - a metahuman high-security prison, which just entered a full-blast riot! Without the Spirit of America at their side, will the Freedom Fighters finally have to lay down their arms?      That very short and succinct summary really doesn't do this issue or the series justice.  Every one of the first three issues has been dense with story and full of fast...

What is that? Eight legs 0

The story solicited: Happy Holidays, Hex fans! You've been good this year, so we got you an issue drawn by the incomparable Eduardo Risso! Jonah Hex was sure he'd seen it all - but that was before he was hired to escort a delivery through the desert. Who or what is "The Package"?     Oh ho what a package this book is.  The cover by Risso perfectly foreshadows the story contained just behind it.  Did I mention that not only was the cover by Risso but also the interior work too!  It must tru...

The little league that can 1

Best issue of this bi-weekly series!  With a beautiful cover by Dustin. There I said it.  I have been espousing the goodness of this series for months and to be honest with you this one single issue has me hoping for another mini that could be done by the creative team behind this issue.  First off if you didn't know Time Travel stories were the best episodes of Star Trek by far.  So I feel that the potential behind such stories translates into comics too!  Judd Winick has given us a dand...

Vandal your such a Savage 0

Wow! Paul Cornell has turned Action Comics into a heavily talked about book.  On the internet and at my LCS.  His BBC roots shine in every issue.  Yep I love BBC TV.  The covers by Finch everymonth are beautiful and the interior art work has been near perfect.  Sean Chen's fill- in issue included.  We had Death in making an appearance in the previous two issues so what can this team do to follow that high note??    Well they bring out Vandal Savage and we get to see his connection to the Black L...

The past that haunts 0

This is the 2nd issue of the new creative team of Guggenheim and Kollins.  In the previous issue we had quite the blow out, or was it a blow up.  A new villain was introduced and a hero was gravely injured.    This issue begins with a flash back to WWII with Jay and Allen on assignment to destroy a Nazi weapon and we get a present day connection.   Scythe's, the villain, connection to the JSA is revealed.  I love the brief exchange between Wildcat and Scythe.  The story continues to unfold by ...

Kingdom not to come 0

Speedy Review:  Good: Fast paced, great action, pulls of emotions, fantastic characterization, and story line see its end.  Winick has his best issue to date on this series.  He has done a great job putting together this team and building up.  Also, we see Max serve a purpose that was hinted at so it really wasn't a suprise.  However, the timing and the laser sharp stroke that this plot point reaches its end (and thus a begining of a new extention) was perfect.  Joe Bennett's art has not always ...

Nice start 0

I have no history with the THUNDER Agents.  I in fact knew nothing about these characters or any series that has come before.  I was a tabula Rosa when I added this book to my pull list, which I added to my list solely because Nick Spencer and Cafu being the creative team behind the book.  I am a huge fan of both.  Spencer's star has risen very fast as it should his Morning Glories series is fantastic.  Also, Cafu's great work on Action Comics last year.    On to the review-   What make...

America Rise 0

This is the 3rd issue of the latest Freedom Fighters series (the other two were limited this is on going)  and it is full of..well a lot!  This is a very "full" book.   It see the wrap up of the Native American gods story thread.  Neat and quick.  Yes, I am happy that it ended quickly.  There had been so much going on in the first two issues that the if feel the story was moving slowly under its own weight.  With this issue we have a clear direction of where we are going.  The confusion or maybe...

JLA VS CSA in a multiverse confrontation 1

First off lets marvel that we are reading issue 50 of this current volume and its lovely cover by Ethan Van Sciver.....ok that done now onward to the review.   James Robinson has been a bit uneven on his run with this current lineup of hero's.  The book at times seems overly filled with "we're in the JLA" moments.  Which this issue does have a brief fore ray into again but it was brief.  I like the character moments but their shock of being in the group needs to end.  The opening scene,...

Artic throw down 0

Judd Winicks run for me has been as good as the Palmiotti/Gray/Connor run.  I have enjoyed the direction the character has gone and love Sami Basri's art.   This issue is no exception.  The addition of Batman, hopefully will help sales, was welcome crossover into and out of JL: Generation Lost.  The new or developing part of the book is the addition of Power Girls own Oracle type character.  This did feel a bit like Batgirl in that aspect.  However, it works.  PG has been having problems of late...

60 issues and still going strong 0

Ok, dear readers I haven't been reviewing many titles of late.  Work and life kind of took over for the past several weeks or so.  Well here we are with Jonah Hex #60  Yep that is 6. 0.  Who would have thought.  I am still relatively new to this run only being on board, minus trades I have read, since issue 50.  However,  I have to say that every month this is a book that I look forward to!  No, it isn't a superhero book but it is exciting every issue and the one and done formate is perfect.  Ji...

Let us start with a look at fantastic Bermejo variant!         Speed Review:  Get out and buy this and you won't regret it!     That's done..Ok now on to the review! I am a huge Superman fan and have to say that I am finding Stracznski's run, however short it has been, an original perspective on the character, well if not original at least fresh.  The "man on the street" perspective has been fun.  However, the issues that a certain be-cowled hero raises are spot on!  The issues addresses that ...

A fleeting memory 0

Justice League: Generation Lost has me wanting an on-going with Winick writing and either Lopresti or one of the other penciler's on the book.  Every other week I smile when I see this in my pull.  Solid, fun, interesting are just some words that I have used to describe this series to my fellow comic book fans as I entice them into giving it a go.  Most of them had read the old JLI and had no idea that they might enjoy a "modern" take on that team.  I credit Winick with making a simple concept w...

A Titans tale of two teams 0

I have to let all of you know that I have removed and added this book on my pull list.  I swore that I was done before the JLA/JSA crossover began and ended up getting that and I have to say I did not really like it much.  I got really sick of the JLA issues (the JSA issues were much better) and all the dialogue boxes.  I like them if used properly but the Robinson run has taken them to a whole new level and that isn't a good thing.  So why am I buying and reading JLA #49 well I kind of...

Speedy Review!!  Go figure Palmiotti and Gray are writing a book and I am buying it!!  I loved the first Freedom Fighter's mini that came out some years back.  Then was somewhat disappointed in the second one.  However, as soon as this was announced I was on board.  Justin and Jimmy are a team worth checking out on whatever project they are doing together!  So how was this you ask?  Well I was very pleased with the opening chapter of this new on-going series!  My only complain is with the front ...
