Watchmen will always exist on its own. I might be more averse to it being absorbed into mainstream ongoing DC if it hadn't been so self contained and hadn't come out so long ago now.
There is potential for versions of these characters to tell interesting stories. Going back and trying to sequelize or twist up the original book would be far more offensive (yes, yes, I'm aware of Before Watchmen)
There has been time to breathe, and I don't think anything the main continuity does going forward will tarnish the original any more than it has. These characters, however COULD IMPROVE the main continuity. It's inevitable; I'm choosing to look at it pragmatically.
Why does Deadpool still have his usual speech bubbles? Iron Man didn't have his stylised ones back then.
But IRL Deadpool didn't actually exist back then. Not really a 1:1 situation.
And in The Mighty Avengers, when Iron Man gets stranded back in time (80s, I think) and the comic becomes stylized to reflect it, they do give Tony modern speech visuals.
Heh. Wouldn't it be great if the bulk of the movie was Steppenwolf, and then randomly in the third act they have an anticlimactic end to that fight, have Darkseid come out of nowhere as a lame CGI boss battle, instead of waiting for a proper sequel?
I'm really liking what Marvel's doing but I kinda wish they'd move past between IV and V. What about between V and VI? Or III and IV??
They will, but for continuity's sake they'll want to fill in an era at once, roughly, as much as they can. Plus, between IV and V they have Han Solo. They can tell more lighthearted stories there. Our main characters really had a rough go of things between III & IV and V & VI. Those stories should and doubtlessly will be told, but I feel as though they really want to palate cleanse the franchise a bit.
