The Changing Interests of Comics

I've often wondered how people start reading comics in today's market.  Do they go in to a comic shop? Do they see comics at Wal-Mart? Do they see the graphic novel section at Barnes & Noble? Maybe they pick up something at the library and that gets them started?  What does it?

Growing up, my local comic book shop was a corner market down the road a bit from my grandparents' house.  My cousins, my brother, and I would walk down there as kids to pick up some candy or a Coke or something like that.  Eventually we keyed in on the spinner rack full of comics and bought one.  My cousin and I were the ones that really got in to them for the first year or so.  We mainly used them to draw by, but eventually I got hooked on reading them.  From there... the rest is history.

So, I'm curious - where did you see your first comic book?  What motivated you to buy it?

I started watching the Spidey cartoon when I was little and since then comics became part of my already sizeable reading agenda.

Outside mediums for me. Then I bought Watchmen, was blown away and am now a hardcore lover of the medium.

In 1979 I received my Introductory comic an issue of Defenders, first thing I collected monthly was the first "Secret Wars" , started to check out DC just before "Crisis on infinite Earths",was introduced to Indies/Defunct companies and began to collect these in early 90's, Having collected what equates to a mid-range store inventory, I now buy certain issues, by certain writers/artists only. Currently enjoying the Dark Horse "Gold Key" line.

I used to read comics since I was around 7, though mainly those crappy Archie TMNT books. In 96, I saw a Spider-Man comic in my local supermarket and picked it up because of the cover, and I've been a Marvel fan ever since. I;ve always been a Superman and Batman fan, but for some reason never felt the urge to pick up DC comic books until around 99 when I picked up JLA (JLA versus Bruce Wayne). I was never a hardcore fan then sticking only to the more well known stuff like Batman, Avengers,, etc. I think 2007 is when I became a hardcore comic fan, after reading 52. I used to prefer Marvel until around 2009, when I started getting more and more into the DC universe.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Even though it was like 24 years ago. I saw my younger cousin with a Donald Duck comic and asked him where he got it. He said at the grocery store. After begging my Mom to take me up there and buy one I ended up getting a Punisher book guest starring Spider-Man. What I recall most was how violent it was. Punisher was attacked by two thugs while cooking breakfast and threw hot bacon grease in their face. It was awesome. After that I started picking up comics at yard sales.

Same, but it was watching reruns of B:TAS that got me hooked.

There was a time I found myself shopping at a local shops and eventually finding myself working there.  I did that at three different shops in three different cities.  Fun jobs, but I never really made any money since I just turned around and bought MORE comics. LOL.

Spider-Man was the first comic I read, mostly got it because I liked the cartoon.

Now I mostly read webcomics because they're free and the authors tend to not rape my favorite character, unlike some comic companies *cough* Marvel *cough*

My brother 'grew out' of comics and gave me boxes filled with 'm. And that's where it started (although these were all European comics).
