Good article, and something that should definitely be said especially as the industry/culture grows out to wider audiences. Trolling anywhere is stupid, but using freedom of speech to defend hate speech is stupider.
Jesus tell me about it. I'm glad they're trying to diversify, but I can just see the meeting where he was created, a bunch of 30-40 something white dudes throwing out the edgiest ideas they could. "Yo, he's like Arab and stuff" "Yeah, and give him a gun and a tattoo, BOOM!" "We are going to BLOW PEOPLES MINDS!!!". And scene.
I hope the character works out, but I would not be surprised if he becomes a back up character in whatever 2nd tier GL book is out there a year from now.
I think DC should have made a real clean slate instead of leaving the door open for past continuity. It just leads to confusion, and possibly handcuffs them from doing certain stories without a lot of explanation or someone getting pissed off.
It's basically a whole new character, so that's fine. It's always weird when writers try to retro fit homosexuality onto a character, and almost always feels like an attention grab. I hope his gay lifestyle does not become Alan's only defining character trait though. One of my biggest problems with Mark Millar's turn on Authority is that being gay became the sole defining trait of the Midnighter and Apollo, making them pretty boring characters.
Would love a Lois Lane comic in the vein of "Queen and Country", have Lois travel the world and use her skill and intellect to get stories no one else could.
She really screwed people over, and even with all the reality rebooting around her, there are a few bodies on her. If I was on her team, I'd play it cool, but always have a bullet ready just in case.
