Why Americans will never accept Soccer as a "real" sport

Soccer as it is known to Americans, is the worlds most popular sport! It is played by millions in every country around the world. The world cup in 2006 had and estimated 700+ million viewers not including people inside and outside the stadium. The two biggest leagues (English Premier League and Italian Serie A) have more fans than the NFL, MLB, NHL or any other American professional sports league. The fans are amazing (I mean they riot for the most pointless games, yet in the US you have to win a World Series to riot). Games have near 100,000 people at them, every one sings songs, drinks, celebrates, and cheers on their favorite club. Every one I know that has traveled to Europe and gone to a match has become a soccer fan because of the atmosphere at a game. Yet why do Americans still consider it a "sissy" sport? Professional Soccer players or as Americans insist on calling them "Foot fairies" have a skill and athletic ability that most people can only dream of. This years world cup takes place in South Africa from June 11th through July 11th. The United States actually has a good team this year yet no body seems to care. Is this because the MLS has been a huge failure? Or are people in America too stubborn to realize that this sport is truly a great sport! Sorry Americans but your version of Football is only watched by 1 country, REAL FOOTBALL is watched in every country in the world! Does any one know why soccer cannot be accepted in the United States?

A bit off-topic here... I can clearly say that the reason the Philippines is the only not-soccer-crazy country in Asia is because the Americans are not that much into it. It's a bit disappointing that our likes or dislikes are highly-dictated by the US cause we think we're little brown Americans. Still lovely to watch some NBA though. Ever since I moved to Australia the Basketball I watch seem to suck more and more! Well at least Aussies appreciate some real football (though they still prefer rugby). Hehehe!

I will say, NO.... It is a very good sport, but the best sport... I think not. Rugby is better, so is Hockey, so is Lacrosse.

Best Team Sports.
1. Rugby.
2. Hockey.
3. Lacrosse.
4. Soccer.
5. Baseball.

Every other Team sport is just Hoo Hummm... IMHO : )

honestly all sports bore the crap out of me. hell just the concept of watching a match/round/game for an hour is enough to make me blow my brains out. but honestly i would rather watch soccer any day over the other sports people mindlessly drone to

@Supreme, not being biased just posting the facts guy ;)

@Wafflefries, oh yeah dude I'm not denying that(I know there's leagues all over) but was just stating it's not as BIG as it is here and in Europe but a lot of sports have grown over the past 10 years worldwide in general now as oppose to years ago where it was just Hockey-canada, Baseball-usa, Basketball-usa, soccer-everywhere for the most part except a few places... I already said though just so I can establish what I meant that baseball isn't the biggest in europe..like a  few places but that's it lol, asia, usa, canada and south america especially though it's 100 x more popular. ;) but yeah I hear what you're saying.

But now you see they're all growing vastly all over the place ;) which is good.

Yeah I know Basketball is played in Europe man lol I had even said there's a league(not as big as NBA's) but still, and same for Hockey now too...Baseball is bigger in Asia and a few parts of Europe(not a lot) and the rest of the world...more or less.

Globally I'm telling you Baseball is more played then Basketball, Basketball doesn't even have a world competition where Baseball does every few years...that's proof right there, Basketball isn't that huge in Asia(there's like literally 1 or 2 max asian players in NBA lol)

A lot of surveys in general are usually dependent on the area and can be biased, even ones here...I just prefer to find out for myself.

"
There are actually professional Asian basketball leagues. I lived in South Korea for four years, so I would know. I would agree that baseball is more popular in Asia over basketball, but not in Europe. And yes, there is a World Basketball Championship. It's called the FIBA basketball  championship and This year it is taking place in Turkey. Most NBA players not from the US play for their national team and the US usually fields a US team as well. Below is the link to the website.

I didn't know Americans didn't accept Soccer. I always have, and used to play it when I was younger. It's as real a sport as basketball is.

I'm pretty sure Soccer/Football continues to grow in popularity (in the United States). The World Cup is especially popular and Olympic Soccer is always one of the major draws for American T.V. audiences. The 94' FIFA World Cup shattered an attendance record that had been around since the 50's (which was held in the US :D). Now I'm not sure how accurate Wikipedia is on the subject, but according to them it was the single highest attended sporting match in U.S. history. I'd say the majority of Americans have full on embraced Soccer (you cant turn around in the states without another soccer complex going up). The younger generations especially seem to have embraced soccer more so then say, Baseball. Sure there are still pockets of Sunday morning arm chair qaurterbacks who will never accept Soccer but I don't think its fair to cast the whole of the United States under one umbrella. That would be like us (the States) saying that all European Soccer fans are Road Flare hurling racists criminals ;)

I hate how people just make up sh#t about Americans. We invented less than half of the sports that exist and yet we televise all of them..so how the hell won't we accept a sport because it's not American? That's just ignorant.

for some odd reason... I have noticed that most people I talk to about this usually give these reason for why they wont accept Soccer as a real american sport...
1. its a Game for sissy boys
2. its boring to watch
3. they wanna call it Football... but it aint like Our Football... so therefore its crap
I actually like Soccer / Futbol  but for whatever reason many Americans see the game as something that is Boring and Second Rate in terms of a Sport...

I played Rugby, Hockey, Baseball. I was also on the Wrestling Team. I am now heavy in MMA and Kendo, I hope to be in the loop when Kendo launches into a more pop sport aswell. It is huge in France, and of coarse Japan, but not so big in America yet. I faced a guy from South Africa last week, and scored on him six times in three moves, I was very happy to rep my school.

Basket Ball is played in Europe. I've never seen Baseball player in Europe. It might beat it in America. But on a global scale Basket Ball is more played than Baseball. Basketball is also played in Asia.
As for the survey it could be biased.

The list was from a world wide survey in a newspaper article. The most watched sports or some title like that. Can't remember where I read it. But I remember the list being that.

I understand what you mean. Like football as been here for centuries. And apparently, to my knowledge, an Englishman was fed up with using his feet probably weren't any good, so he picked the ball up and not long form that rugby was made. That got popular in American and then American Football was made. This was like late 18 hundreds. "
Right. Basically Football and Baseball are like I said ingrained into American culture. Growing up our heroes are football or baseball or basketball players. We see ourselves as Bart Starr, or Roger Staubach, or Dan Marino in our back yards. We play stickball in the yard with our friends and pretend we are Joe DiMaggio or Ken Griffey Jr.  My Dad gave me a football as soon as I could walk, I got a baseball glove when I was six. We used to play catch for hours, just me and my Dad. It's a father son bonding thing. Fathers hope their sons will grow up to be football or baseball or basketball stars....at least thats my take. "
Same with Football here. Depending on which region you're from. Because there are thousands of football teams in the UK. Most of that is made up from England. Like when we were young, in Liverpool. We would be, I'm Kenny Daglish, I'm Kevin Keegan, I'm Ian Rush. The first time I played football, I was 14 months. Or parents carry their kids and move them to kick the ball if they are to young to stand.

We have a NY soccer team here but nobody cares about them, I did see their new stadium it's nice but there's just no scene for it here..that's where like Luna stated, you have different cultures and parts of the world that enjoy different things...

Most watched though doesn't always mean most popular, there are sports that more people watch but never go to the games, in terms of watched Baseball and Football are up there for sure, but I also know yearly they sell ridiculous amount in tickets...

And my opinion just as yours and everyone elses here is what we all like, but that doesn't alter the fact that your list was off...with your top 10 in rank.....india having more people then America proves nothing though you should know....like you were telling me before, about "the world doesn't revolve around america" well it doesn't revolve around India or any other individual country either...lol I can make up the difference with Latin america, US, Canada and various parts of Asia who play Baseball...just saying ;)
"

Why was my list off? I said from my head. I named them. Like I guess you did with your players. These players are known around the world, maybe not most of America though.
And the India having more people was to show you that if more people are watching a sport then that would be classes as more popular. I could easily have said Africa, Europe etc to add the numbers up.
Example.
300 Million people watch Tennis
350 Million people watch Swimming
The people watching the swimming would be classed as being more popular

Cricket I know is popular in Europe mainly and India, but on this side of the world totally different story...America, Canada and Latin America there isn't any well known, huge Cricket leagues....those regions it's typically all Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey and American Football...

India have a Huge Cricket league, I just don't know what it is called.

I also didn't ask for anyone to list legends

you said before...

now you talk Soccer legends? How many are there? lol exactly.

so I named some.

You're thinking of a different Dimaggio, you're thinking of the voice Actor John Di Maggio.....Joe Dimaggio is a legendary Yankee(one of the most known) but the last name is also somewhat common which is why you most likely confused him for another Di Maggio lol

@Chocolate, yeah I hear ya man lol...as far as I'm concerned I respect Soccer, not into it but definitely respect it. I think every sport in the world should be respected, it's just different parts of the world have different sports played that are more popular one place where another place it's hardly played.

I am just bothered by the bashing of certain sports, I am more-so trying to defend all the sports people have been bashing, I haven't meant to insult any sports. As far as saying Soccer is boring to watch, that is my opinion. I do like playing it, but watching is pretty boring IMO. That is different than claiming things about sports that aren't only opinions, but being presented as facts.

No, its showing people are willing to defend their sport. Showing loyalty.

I will admit I was offended by some people's remakes, making my remarks sound the way they did.
So I will be a bigger man an apologies for such remarks.

Supreme Marvel, your list is way off lmao....since you obviously took offense to that...it's still fact regardless of which I listed...and your top ten is hardly top 10 around the world...lol Basketball is not ahead of Baseball for one, and Cricket? you're kidding me right? lol... sorry but that's wrong, if anything it would be Soccer, then Baseball then everything else...worldwide (afterall Baseball is also played all over now ever hear of the WBC?)=World Baseball Classic every 3 years? Cricket isn't even played outside of Europe...

And I never said the world revolves around america...so you can stop putting words in my mouth....secondly, best fans on Earth? That's all opinion...every team says that but I'll tell ya this much, the Yankees by far have the most loyal, supportative and have made more money then anyone else...period, as in billions...over the past few years....

  1. Umm, actually people know about the Yankees because they're how do you say the most famous team in the world? Yeah....you name me one sports person anywhere in the world that doesn't recognize the interlocking NY right now and I'll be astonished. The Yankees are the Superman of Sports, you can't go anywhere without someone knowing that icon....You want to list legends, 10 players(big list lol)...let's see here just for the Yankees alone I can match that without breaking a sweat...(much less Baseball in general is far too many to count) but here's a few to counter your list both current HOF and easily future ones to come ....Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Yogi Berra, Joe Dimaggio, Phil Rizzuto,  Roger Marris, Alex Rodriguez, Bernie Williams..that's 12 right there...shall I list others from MLB in general? lol

Lastly, lol Japan is no where near America...where did you get that idea?

You asked for them, I gave you what I could think of and stated at the top of my head.
Think of it, Cricket it played in a lot of the big populated countries, India for one has over a Billion people in it. Out numbers America 3 fold. If you're saying it's an opinion, then you statement is an opinion.
I know you didn't say "the world revolves around America" but you were saying it like it does. Well you could come to Europe and you'll be astonished  to find that we wouldn't know about your "legendary" players. I've heard of one of those players you listed: Babe Ruth and that was because I watched Field of Dreams. That Joe DiMaggio, isn't he the guy that does the voice of Bender in Futurama?
Last question I just got mixed up with miles.

@ the guy who said you just sit around in Baseball, obviously you've never played it...lol not just saying that as a fan of the sport but as someone who's actually played it...I've been a catcher, Outfielder and played second base...you don't just sit around lol...and if you do get some sit time, that's a good thing for your team ;)

How about the fact that there's no dumb time clock to abuse or run down like nearly every other sport or call time out every 5 seconds in certain sports? This thread is bringing out a lot of sports ignorance lol

I'm not bashing. Just an observation.
Don't have to be a professional sportsman or any thing to make an observation.
Don't take it personal dude.

Unless you have played a sport, you cannot possibly understand the physical toll of that sport, or even how similar it is to another sport. American Football and Rugby are fundamentally different games. I would know I've played College Club Rugby and College Varsity Football. "
I'm sure you wont mind if I develope an opinion based on what I've seen.

Read this for a small understanding of how American Football being Rugby with pads is a totally ignorant statement.

Baseless assumption, not to mention we've already established that soccer fits this category according to your own criteria.

Blanket statement based on your own personal experience, which thankfully has nothing to do with me.

This is hilarious on more than one level. Take a look at your own grammar and spelling before you go insulting my education.

Football's fast paced and takes a real talent. "
You forgot about the now 1 Canadian team the Toronto Blue Jays (rest in peace Expos lol) "
Regardless who invented it, it was invented in the United States and was first played here, not in Canada.

I don't recall ever mentioning any of these things, or the sports they are associated with, or me watching them. You might want to take a moment to think about the number of baseless speculations you are making. I notice you now acknowledge that soccer is both flashy and loud/noisy. Interesting back-pedal. "
No, I did as you can see. Things that are flashy and loud to stimulate you so you don't get bored.
And the clip of the super bowl being an example of being loud and flashy. To prove the point of American's needing something to keep there attentions so they don't get bored.

I was using that as an example of being "flashy and loud".
So I guess your education system is to blame for you incorrect score.

That's all opinion...every team says that but I'll tell ya this much, the Yankees by far have the most loyal, supportative and have made more money then anyone else...period, as in billions...over the past few years....I'd like to see how much money your soccer team has made, the Yank's have made billions each year literally...
