I think its gotten better. The first issue i actually read was the 8th and basically read it out of order, so i ended up loving it from the start.
Starfire gets more developed and you learn she does remember dick, even though its stated that tamaraneans have a hard time remembering people and faces, she still has this strong recollection of someone she loved years ago and shes sad that she's forgotten his name and a lot of their history. They have a great issue where they have a flashback to how kory and jason met and i wont ruin any of it for you, but it shows her as quite smart and very caring. DEFINITELY not just an emotionless sex-fantasy robot like a lot of people thought of her characterization at the start. And i actually like the supernatural ninja aspect of jasons new history, but maybe thats just me. His swords that seem to gain power whem he draws his own blood with them are just really cool in my opinion. Maybe adding a supernatural element to a former robin, a group of characters that are well known for their badass normal-ness, seems strange....but we all know Jason doesnt really want to fit in with the bat family anymore. I like that he's forging more of an identity past the whole 'revenge-angst' thing. I mean yeah he's still angsty, he's jason, that's still going to be his thing, but he's trying to leave his past behind him and be a crime fighter but by his own rules. Theres even a great scene where he meets with tim drake, off duty/no fighting, and i wont spoil anything but it really adds a lot of depth to him. A lot of old fans went and bought the issue just for that and said it was worth it.
and again this might be an opinion thing but i really like Roy. Your right, he does play the part of the funny guy, but he's also the heart of the team. The nice guy. He's a bit snarky and sarcastic but he's the good guy underneath that can keep things more lighthearted. Hes differant from Jason by being a lot less polished, slick or smart but to me that gives him some of his own charm, the lovably reckless type. plus he's hiding a lot of pain under this 'funny guy' facade. i like how he and star fire are both people who look on the positive side and leave their shitty (or in star fires case, forgotten) lives behind them to make a better future for themselves. and jason todd wants to move towards that too, he doesnt so much have the positive attitude but he wants to move on from his past too. I think that's what i like most about the series overall, a story of three more or less broken people trying to work their way back up, not so much for others, but for themselves. They're maybe a little dysfunctional, a little less ethical than say the justice league, but thats why they're called outlaws.
first impressions arent everything, and i think if you went back to it now you could be pleasantly surprised. I honestly just want more people to give it a chance and im encouraging everyone i can since i really love it myself
