WWF, with the help of Jared Leto, will raise awareness of the poaching of the Rhinos and other endanger species such like elephants and tigers, and to reduce the demand for rhino horns in Africa and Asia. In 2014 there were 1,215 rhinos killed in South Africa, the highest recorded numbers in recent decades. In Asian countries, rhino horns are believed to cause some health benefits, due to this perception it has caused a dramatic rise in poaching of rhinos. In 1960 there were 65,000 rhinos, today there are approximately 4,000 left, in the '90's there were only half of that left numbering in the 2,000's. So far there have been 40 rhino calves to be born at the translocation sites, and only 3 of those have been killed illegally.

The country of South Africa has increased enforcement, making 386 arrests last year.

“My latest adventure in South Africa was as mind-blowing as always. Being that close to majestic creatures like rhinos and elephants reminds me of the deep connection and important responsibility we have to protect and shepherd these fragile species and their habitats. I’m committed and passionate about doing all I can to help ensure that these endangered animals survive, and will continue to encourage others to get into action as well,” said Leto.

“We must join together and protect these powerful yet extremely vulnerable animals from all the senseless slaughter and double our efforts to restore their populations across Africa and Asia. It can and – with a focused global effort – will be done. I’m honored to join with WWF and the global conservation community and do my part. I hope you will too."

“The world needs to wake up to the fact that we’re losing rhinos, elephants and other critically important species,” said Carter Roberts, president and CEO of WWF-US. “Their recovery lies in our hands. We need strong voices that can mobilize the efforts of many and I’m grateful to Jared Leto for lending his reputation and passion to the cause.”

Mr. Leto also joined WWF's Black Rhino Expansion Project veterinarian Dr. Jacques Flamand and other biologists with the andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve to tag and collar three southern white rhinos for the translocation program. Later this year, 100 rhinos will be moved to undisclosed locations to help with the breeding efforts.

During the trip Jared Leto brought along notecards from U.S. children to give to the wildlife rangers thanking them for what they are doing to protect wildlife.
