The Incredible Hulk and the Twins of Evil! (Hostess Ads #76)

On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: The Incredible Hulk and the Twins of Evil! As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

Setting a trap for the Hulk, Abomination teamed with an intelligent Wendigo to beat down the Green Goliath. As the twin villains left their foe defeated, kids with Hostess Fruit Pies showed up, and were able to get Hulk back into a smashing mood.

No new guys here, but the Abomination first appeared in April, 1967's Tales To Astonish #90. Yugoslavian spy Emil Blonsky wanted power. He dosed himself with triple the gamma radiation that Bruce Banner had been exposed to, to give himself the same power as the Hulk. He got his wish, but became a monster more amphibious looking in nature, and he was transformed permanently into the Abomination. He also somehow kept his intelligence intact (maybe because his psyche wasn't fractured, like Banner's, but I'm only guessing).

The Wendigo first appeared six years later, in April, 1973's Incredible Hulk #162, and only about a year-and-a-half before this ad. The seeming intelligence of the Wendigo in this ad is not inconsistent with its original portrayals, if you can believe the cover of his first appearance. In Marvel, the curse of being the Wendigo falls on whomever eats human flesh, while in the Canadian wilderness.

@cbishop You should try and get a wiki page made for these.

@wildvine: There is a wiki page for these- Hostess Superhero Advertisements- as noted (and quoted from) in each list. I'm doing the lists to a) gather together the various issues that the ads appeared in, b) take a look at any characters that may have appeared in the ads or because of the ads, and c) just to be able to give my own commentary without the more rigid guidelines of the wiki. Until I find more issues in my collection that have these ads, this is the last one I'll be doing for a little bit. ...I still have the "Comic Ads" series though. :)

Doing these lists has given me an idea on how to improve the wiki page though. ;)
