The Human Torch in The Icemaster Cometh (Hostess Ads #89)

On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: The Human Torch in The Icemaster Cometh. As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

Able to generate and manipulate the cold, Icemaster first battled the Human Torch; the FF member distracted the chilly villain with Hostess Fruit Pies long enough to melt the city's ice. Icemaster is notable for jumping from the Hostess ads to the main 616 Marvel universe, where he enrolled as a member of the Masters of Evil!

As noted, Icemaster has made a direct transition from ad monkey to bad monkey. Somehow, the Masters of Evil thought a guy defeated by a couple of fruit pies was a good candidate for their team... maybe it was just because he had "master" in his name. It was probably Armadillo's idea: "Hm, yeah... 'Icemaster' ... 'Masters of Evil' ...hey, guys, I know who we can get to join!"

I mean, okay, Frank Miller drew this ad, and Icemaster looks great, but he's basically Iceman with hair. Bobby Drake's an omega level mutant these days, so isn't he more apt to be called Icemaster? Whatever the case, Icemaster the Bobby Drake knockoff is now officially a part of the Marvel 616 universe. While I'm being a little flippant about it here, that's actually pretty cool.
