The Flash A Flash in the Dam (Hostess Ads #51)
|On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.|
So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: The Flash A Flash in the Dam. As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:
A curmudgeon with a desire to make everyone as miserable as he, the elderly Destroyer attempted to wreck the local dam and flood the town. Flash was able to repair the damage and introduce Destroyer to Hostess Twinkies. The villain promptly surrendered.
The name Destroyer is most well known as a Marvel character. First appearing in the July, 1965 Journey Into Mystery #118 (predating this ad by fifteen years) this creation of Odin has plagued Thor time and time again.
DC didn't reuse the name Destroyer until October, 2006 in Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #2- his one and only appearance. The closest DC came to the name before that was Invisible Destroyer, who predates this ad by twenty-one years, having first appeared in December, 1959 Showcase #23.
