Spider-Man in "Hotshot on the Block." (Hostess Ads #105)

No Caption Provided
On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Spider-Man in "Hotshot on the Block." As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

The flame-throwing villain Hotshot dueled it out with Spider-Man on the city streets, only to be thwarted by the web-slinger's fire-resistant webbing. Tossing Hostess Twinkies to his enemy, Hotshot was slung from the nearest lamppost to await the police.

There have been two Hotshots at Marvel since this ad surfaced in 1979. The first appeared in 1988, in Incredible Hulk #345, as one of five gamma irradiated, green skinned survivors of the Leader's gamma bomb attack on Middletown, Arizona. The second appeared in 1995, in The Last Avengers Story #1, and was the son of Black Knight and Sersi.

Will we ever see them again? Hard to say. Now that Disney owns Marvel, we have to consider one other Hotshot who first appeared (in comics) in Darkwing Duck #10, in 2011. I don't know if he appeared in the cartoon before being seen in the comic. It's hard to say if Disney would nix the Marvel Hotshots over the Darkwing Duck Hotshot, but that's mainly me- I'm still waiting for Howard the Duck to turn up as Donald's long lost uncle...but he'll probably still have to wear pants.
