Spider-Man and the Cupcake Caper (Hostess Ads #77)
Not to be confused with Shazam! "The Cup Cake Caper", or Pudge, Girl Blimp in The Cupcake Caper.
| On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982. |
So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Spider-Man and the Cupcake Caper. As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:
During a tiff with Mary Jane, Peter Parker spots Man-Mountain Marko making things rough for the neighborhood police. Using a web-net to subdue his foe, Peter returned to MJ - only to find she was more interested in the available Hostess Cupcakes rather than Pete.
First appearing in the June, 1969 Amazing Spider-Man #73, Man-Mountain Marko predates this ad by seven years. He's been a flunky for one Marvel crime boss after another, including Silvermane (pictured with Marko). Somewhere along the way, he had a singing career, and it was revealed that his strength was due to abuse of an experimental horse steroid. Eventually, he winds up working for ATLAS, and gets eaten by the dragon Mr. Lao...much like a kid eating a Twinkie.
