Smash-Up Derby (Comic Ads #45)
Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy. |
If this looks incredibly similar to the previous ad, it's because it's the exact same idea with a different name and cars that intentionally have a more junky appearance. However, what they lack in looks, they make up for in names. Where the Classy Crashers had names like "Luxury Limo" and "Sedan Royale," the Smash-Up Derby cars have names like "Blast-Em, Bugg-Em, Boss Henry," and "Tough-Tom."
There was apparently a similar toy called Stockcar Smash-Up. The Smash-Up Derby itself seems to have come in at least a couple of different versions, like the "Stars 'N Stripes" version at the right. Because nothing says "America" like a redneck passtime painted up in patriotism!
