Richie Rich in "Soft Gold" (Hostess Ads #101)
|On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.|
So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Richie Rich in "Soft Gold." There are no notes on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page.
Richie has his fortune told, and it reveals a new, spongy gold in his future! A trio of thieves overhear and show up at the Rich Mansion to take the treasure, only to be thwarted by the judo skills of Mr. Rich, Richie and Cadbury. The thieves lose out and look on, while Richie enjoys a Twinkie.
Something to note here is that Richie departs from the Marvel and DC rule that their heroes couldn't partake of the Hostess snacks, for some odd fear of their characters endorsing the product they were in the ad for to begin with. I know- it doesn't make sense to me either. So let's hear it for that Rich kid being the endorsement for reason.
