Captain America in "Fury Unleashed!" (Hostess Ads #71)

On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey,Archie, and Gold Key/Whitman characters as well!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Captain America in "Fury Unleashed!" As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

A bald, green-suited servant of the Trapster, this Goon was wringing Nick Fury's neck when Captain America barged in. Tossing him a shield covered with Hostess Fruit Pies, the Goon relinquished Fury and the Trapster's plot was foiled by Cap.

If Trapster seems familiar to you, he should. He first appeared in the January, 1963 Strange Tales #104, as Paste-Pot Pete. Even with that name, he was a threat to the Human Torch! It only took two-and-a-half years for the editors at Marvel to stop toking the Mary Jane, and in May, 1965, his name was changed to Trapster, in Fantastic Four #38. By 1998, Trapster actually had Spider-Man running from the law. Having devised a way to use his special paste adhesive to mimic the powers of Spidey, he framed the Wallcrawler for murder, which prompted J. Jonah Jameson to offer a five million dollar bounty on ol' Webhead.

Doublecrossed by his contractor, Norman Osborn, Trapster soon wound up with a price on his head too. He was raised to even higher badass status by taking out members of The Hand that came to claim the bounty. Spidey, hiding behind the identity of Dusk, teamed with Trapster long enough to defeat Osborn, and convince The Villain Formerly Known As P.P. Pete to testify against his former employer.
