Batman in "The K-9 Caper!" (Hostess Ads #18)

No Caption Provided
On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Batman in "The K-9 Caper!" As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

Dressed in a full-size dog outfit, the villain called K-9 disrupted the Kennel Club Dog Show with his ultrasonic whistle. Using Hostess Twinkies to distract K-9, Batman swiped the whistle and brought the criminal to justice.

Believe it or not, DC had used the name K-9 previous to this ad (besides the Warner Bros. pet sidekick to Marvin the Martian). K-9 was one of The Evil Eight- a team of villains trying to take out Chris King & Vicki Grant, in Adventure Comics #485, in September of 1981. Like all the characters in the "Dial 'H' For Hero" feature, K-9 was created by one of the fans. He was basically a flea bitten Wolverine, but I've always liked him.

I didn`t know that about Dial H.

I also didn`t know that Batman had twinkies in his utility belt, but I guessed that he would, when I started to read these again...

I didn`t know that about Dial H.

The Dial H run in Adventure Comics (that continued into New Adventures of Superboy) [see WUBI #76 and #77] was the only run where the characters (heroes, villains, sometimes vehicles and clothes) were created by the fans. The others were all created by the writer & artist.

I also didn`t know that Batman had twinkies in his utility belt, but I guessed that he would, when I started to read these again...

They're not in his utility belt. They're in a secret pocket of his cape- same as Superman used to keep his hyper compressed street clothes folded into (and never lose them). That's what he's really doing when he grabs his cape and holds it up over his face- he's reaching into the secret pocket with the other hand and grabbing a Twinkie. True story. :}
