Would U Buy It #74 / 12-Month Trades #1: "Amethyst: P.O.G."

DateWUBI # 74/ 12-MT #1:View:Attached to Forum:Back/ Next
12/02/10Amethyst: P.O.G. (Vol. 1-3)(Blog) (Forum)Showcase Presents: APOG
12-Month* Trades is an idea I've had for certain series where I'd like to see the whole run in trade paperbacks (TPB). A year's worth of issues seems like a good sized collection, so: "12-Month Trades." Think of these as sort of like Marvel's Classic trades: no frills with the names - just the title and a volume number, and that's it.
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld

For the first 12-MT candidate, I'm picking Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld. Growing up in the Eighties, I was a sucker for any new character that came along, and Amethyst was no different. Yeah, it looks a little girly for most guys, but I actually really liked the concept of all the characters being named for different gems, and their characterizations going somewhat with their names. I also think Amethyst and the Gemworld have the potential for strong connections to several DC characters, including three big ones: Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Superman. So it would be good to have her stuff in trade, if she were ever reintroduced into the DCU. If we start at the preview in Legion of Super-Heroes and go through the 1987 series, it actually works out to 36 issues (not quite 12 for the first volume, since we'd just pull the preview from LSH #298). Without further ado, the 12-Month Trades...

Proposed Title:Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld, Vol. 1-3.
Vol. 1 Collecting 12 Issues:
  • Legion of Super-Heroes #298.
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1983) #1-10
  • DC Comics Presents #63.
Vol. 2 Collecting 12 Issues:
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1983) #11-12
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld Annual #1.
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1985) #1-9.
Vol. 3 Collecting 12 Issues:
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1985) #10-16
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld Special #1.
  • Amethyst #1-4.
Covers: (click to enlarge)
Vol 1 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1983) #6
Vol 1 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1983) #6

For the Volume 1 cover, I'd use the cover to A:POG #6, although using the first issue's cover is always a possibility with any TPB. LSH #298 is for the Amethyst preview only, and since DCCP #63 was released November 1983, I placed it after the November '83 issue of Amethyst.

*******

Vol 2 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1985) #2
Vol 2 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1985) #2

For the Volume 2 cover, I'd use A:POG ('85) #2, just to keep it thematic with Amethyst on the flying horse. If the themed cover idea isn't desirable, then A:POG ('83) #12 is a decent cover. A:POG ('85) #9 is okay, but a bit cartoony for my taste.

*******

Vol 3 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1985) #12
Vol 3 TPB Cover: Amethyst: PoG (1985) #12

Staying with the theme of Amethyst on the flying horse, I'd use the cover to A:POG ('85) #12 for the Volume 3 cover. If the theme wasn't used, then A:POG ('85) #10 would be a striking TPB cover, although the A:POG Special #1 cover is also nice.

Would you buy it? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading.

*12-Month Trades was originally called 12-Issue Trades. I wasn't totally comfortable with "Issue," because I wanted more freedom to add or subtract an issue here or there, without just saying, "Sometimes, I might cheat." So I edited the idea a little. -cb ;)

Thanks again!

From what I heard of AMETHYST - PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD, she was the pre-teen version of XENA with a mix of CAPTAIN MARVEL. I have vol. 1 #1, Vol. 2 # and Vol.3 #1. I even have DC PRESENTS #63 (where SUPERMAN teams up with AMETHYST...it ties into an issue back in volume 1). The first volume sounds epic...but the later volumes seem dark...

@AMP - Seeker of Lost Knowledge: I have all of the Amethyst issues represented here (including DCCP #63), but it has been years since I read them.  From what I remember of reading them as they came out, the original maxi-series was kind of epic, because they had to tell the story in 12 issues (13 counting DCCP), and I think they were trying to knock it out of the park, to get an ongoing series.  I think after the original 12 issue maxi-series, they kind of settled into trying to tell an ongoing tale, and didn't feel the pressure to tell something epic.  I remember she went blind around the time Dr. Fate guest starred, but I don't know if that was permanent (I assume not).

Like I say in the blog, I think she has huge potential for strong ties to big players in the DCU, but I really don't think DC wants any more big players in their sandbox - that's just my opinion though.

Amethyst almost got a story in Wonder Woman during Gail Simone's run, she even tried to get the original writer to co-write it with her. But DC nixed the idea.

@Emperor Gonzo Noir: If DC nixed that idea, then you can almost be certain that they have some other plan for Amethyst... or that they just didn't like the changes it might bring to Wonder Woman.

@Emperor Gonzo Noir:Tony's article on Rip Hunter's chalkboard (from yesterday): "The Heroine of Gem World returns!" ;) ...Past experience with Blue Beetle told me it was so. :D

6/7/12 Update: Added update to blog, concerning DC's solicitation of Showcase Presents: Amethyst...Vol.1. Yes! :) In black-and-white though. :(
