A Christian's Thoughts on "God Hates Nerds"

08/10/10A Christian's Thoughts on "God Hates Nerds"(Blog) (Forum)SDCC(Back) (Next)
Photoshopped bigotry - way to go nerds!
Photoshopped bigotry - way to go nerds!

I've been thinking about this since it hit the web, during San Diego Comic-Con, and it's just bugging me. Before their "God Hates Nerds" protest, out in front of this year's SDCC, I had never heard of Westboro Baptist Church. I had heard something about their "God Hates Fags" protest, but like most news, ignored it. It's not that I bury my head in the sand where news is concerned, I just generally don't like network newscasts. Most newscasters smile a little too hard, try to subtly take over reports from each other, and use insipid, vapid conversation to segue from one segment to the next. I find that most hour newscasts could have been done in thirty minutes or less, and most of them leave me cringing, wishing for the succinct, professional reporting of Walter Cronkite, and his ending of "And that's the way it is. Good night." Speaking of succinct, back to the point.

One website posted a video report on the protest, and humorously interviewed one of the costumed con goers, who was dressed as Jesus. To quote that "Jesus:" "Fred's got issues." While the "God Hates..." posters are certainly attention getting, they are horribly, horribly UN-Christian. First, "God hates" is an oxymoron - the two words should never be used in conjunction like that, except in one sentence: God hates sin. This could be debated ad naseam, as each person's understanding of the Bible is usually varied in some way. Yes, there are verses in the Bible that don't make much sense, seem to contradict other verses, and there's probably a verse in there somewhere that says God hated something. I don't have the answers to all that, but for myself, I chalk those things up to a lack of understanding on my own part, centuries of retranslating of the original languages (and the agendas of men in doing so), and probably a lack of context, from not knowing what ancient cultures were like (I mean me not knowing, not the scholars [although y'never know]). For the sake of moving along, let's just say either you believe or you don't. I do. If you don't, hey, it's your eternity, do what you will with it.

God doesn't hate the nerd (or the "fag," for that matter). He hates sin. So yeah, if you've built a cobwebbed altar to Spider-Man in your armoire, where you light candles and sing the 1960's Spider-Man cartoon theme as a hymn to Peter Parker, that's idolatry. You're in sin, and should probably take a little time to get right with your Creator. Actually, y'know what? You should probably seek help. Psychiatric help. The kind that uses special medications, and straps you to your bedrail for your own protection. Once you're back on an even keel, then you should get right with your Creator.

Note: There was a video right here of the 1960's Spider-Man cartoon theme, but it died. -cb

If, on the other hand, you call yourself a believer, and you enjoy a Spider-Man comic on occasion (or other title[s] of your choice)... read closely... that's okay. Even if it's every month, or gee, every Wednesday. Now, there are verses about your money indicating where your true love lies. One in particular says "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." So, assuming "treasure" is "money" in that verse, if the bulk of your money's going to your comic shop, then your heart might be a little off balance towards the sequential art side, and Christianity is all about the balance. Let's be practical for a minute though...

People have hobbies, and people have jobs, and comics can be either or both for people, and that's fine. It's an artform, not a contribution towards juvenile delinquency. Read your comics, enjoy them, and keep moving. If you find that they give you joy, maybe that's something to thank God for. If they don't give you joy, maybe you should consider not reading them anymore. A comic is like any other form of entertainment - there's good and there's bad out there. If you throw everything out that's got a little bad in it, pretty soon, you won't be involved in anything. That goes for pretty much everything, including religion. If you can pare your life down to the bread and water existence of a monk, and that works for you, great, but that doesn't mean it will work for everybody, and that doesn't mean it is right for everybody. There is no twelve step program to walking with God, but Jesus said there are two things that sum up all of the Law and the Prophets (most of the Old Testament): "Love the Lord your God with all your might," and "love your neighbor as yourself." If you can strive for those two things, you'll be about as Christian as you're ever likely to be. If anyone tells you they've got some answer outside of that, it's either focusing on the details or it's wrong. Those two broad strokes can get you through just about anything though.

And that's the way it is. Good night.
And that's the way it is. Good night.

In the meantime, be a comic nerd, if that's your thing. Read it, enjoy it, seal it up in plastic and cardboard, blog about it, chat about it, and debate it until your eyes turn red and you've run out of your favorite beverage. God's not going to be angry with you for that, and he surely doesn't hate you for it. Remember: "Fred's got issues," and "Jesus" was on the side of the comic nerds. And that's the way it is. Good night.

8-13-10 EDIT: I have received a couple of comments concerning the veracity of the protest. One comment has stated that the "God Hates Nerds" pic is photoshopped from a previous "God Hates Fags" pic, and that seems to be the case. Another comment asked if I could produce a link from something besides a comic fansite. My first response on a possible rumor is always to go to the source, so I first tried the WBC website, and could find nothing. Half of their links were broken, according to my Internet Explorer, and their pickets schedule starts at the present day and moves forward. I could find no information on past pickets, and could not access the blog link, to see if I could find the quote mentioned in just about every single article on the comic con protest. However...

Here's the Atlantic Wire, talking about the then upcoming protest: Westboro Baptist Church To Protest Comic Con.

Here's an article on sandiego.com, talking about their experience of driving past the protest: Comic Con: The Westboro Baptist Church Gets Out Protested.

Here's examiner.com's article: Comic Con Counter Protest Sends Westboro Baptist Church Running.

You can find a few youtube videos from people that were there also, but they were a little sketchy. So to answer any future questions, as far as I can tell, the protest actually happened, but whether there was actually a "God Hates Nerds" sign is questionable.

This is the first time I heard anything like that.  "God hates nerds."   That sounds like some misplaced focus, or just a idiotic reason to try and validate a persons reason for not liking a specific thing.

Sometimes it's so hard to be a Christian. Obviously, I'm supposed to obey the Ten Commandments, but I so want to beat all those Westboro imbeciles to death.

@Amegashita:  Thankfully, I didn't make it up.  Those folks are a little off center.

@~The Wanderer~: Thank you.  I just think common sense should speak out sometimes. lol

@FadeToBlackBolt: It really wouldn't be worth it.  I think of them as what a former pastor used to call that kind of supposed Christian - the "Granola Christian," aka "the fruits, nuts and flakes."  The really odd thing about the Comic-Con protest is that it seemed to be an afterthought.  They were in San Diego to protest something to do with a Vice President.  It was like SDCC was a quick side trip, since they were there anyway.  To put so much effort into hate must be exhausting.

In my opinion, it was a failed attempt to attract attention, but it only made them look like fools.

In my personal opinion, because we are so known for judging others, thanks to vocal or well known movements like Westboro Baptist Church, Jerry Falwell, and possibly the Holy Crusades.  When we get right, others may follow.

See, it's "Christians" like these that are setting a bad example for the rest of us. This is precisely the reason why people, especially young adults, are becoming negligent of our ideals and beliefs.

Prim', you are always use the fewest words possible in your replies (possibly balancing out the universe, for my overabundance of them), but sometimes, you should elaborate a little.  Are you referring to the guy in the "God Hates Nerds" pic, or me? lol

Thanks all, for your comments.  Like I said, before the SDCC protest, I had never really heard of WBC, so this was new to me.  A "Christian" group that could spread a doctrine of hate boggles my mind.  As I noted in an earlier comment, there's a historical precedent for it, but to see it today... that's painful.  A doctrine of controversy is one thing, but this is just hate, and it's just the wrong way to approach Christianity.  I hope that the effort exhausts them quickly, and they find a better way to follow God.

LOL... I just got a mental picture of the typical image of "God" - long hair, long beard - but with taped glasses and a pocket protector. lol

Yeah, I think that's just to show where they got the idea to present God and hatred together, but it is so out of context (and may be a mistranslation, IMO).  God showed one brother favor over the other, due to a blessing that was received from their father.  I don't recall how that played out, but I don't think it's accurate to say it portrays God as a hater.

God doesn't hate anyone. In fact nerds seem to be a generally more moral group of people than allot of other people. People just don't like nerds because they are just nicer imo. They may be suffering for their possible moral inspiration from the right vs wrong formula you get in most comic books. Most other people don't seem to have a concept of right and wrong.

First let me say that this is just what a nerd needs someone to hate them.  As if the nerd didn't have enough of that.  I have to be honest I loved what you wrote and the Westboro Baptist church really does some awful, cruel and hurtful things, but is this real?  I tried to find a news story on this from any semi-legitimate source and came up empty.  I can only find stories on comic fan sites.  I'm not saying it didn't happen.  I just can't find it anywhere.  I even went to the Westboro home page where they list their protests and found nothing about this.  If you could post a link to a news organization that wrote about this that would be great.

Let's put this in perspective.  What Westboro does to our deceased veterans and their families is a lot worse than any nerd protest.  I can laugh at their stupidity at a comic convention.  I am filled with sorrow and rage when they come to my state (and they have many times) to protest a funeral of a recently dead veteran.  There was one such incident that was in the neighboring town of mine a few years ago.  Friends of mine went to school with.  His parents and siblings lost a really special person who fought for our country and instead of being able to morn they were subjected to this nightmare.

I liked what you said and agree with you even if this didn't happen but I just wanted to speak for the ones who are suffering at the hands of Westboro Baptist church more than us.  More than nerds.  I am happy in my skin.  Keep up the great blogs!

@cbishop: This is extremely well written. I appreciate everything you've said here and I had no idea that there was actually a group protesting comic con. That's just absurd. Not that protesting homosexuality is any less absurd, but man. I almost feel sorry for those Westboro individuals. What a sad life. Hopelessly devoted to something they don't even understand.

@Liberty: Hi, Liberty.  I had to do a little Google searching, but I did come up with a few links that were not comic sites.  They've been posted at the end of the blog, as an edit.  I'm glad you asked about sources, because I had looked at a few articles on comic sites before writing this, but hadn't really thought of looking elsewhere.  I just figured: why would they make that up?  It's been known to happen though, so checking other sites was a good call.  At this point, I can say that either the protest happened, or more than just the comic sites were sucked in to the hoax.

I should note too, that I think WBC's protesting of military funerals is abominable.  By comparison, the Comic Con protest is nothing - even laughable.  It's also petty and pathetic though.  I mean, from military funerals to comics?  Really?  How could they take themselves seriously after that?  ...I also just had a thought: how many WBC members have a picture of Jesus in their home, or Jesus on a cross, hanging on their wall?  A graven image is a graven image.

@Tmul501: Hi, Timul, and thanks for the kind words.  The verse referenced is Romans 9:13: Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." (which is referencing Malachi 1:2-3 [thank God for footnotes]) - New International Version.

Pretty much, WBC has taken a verse out of context to justify their hate.

Wow, thought I would never hear from the Westboro Baptist Church again, the one group that would probably have Jesus Christ himself punch them all in the face and personally drag their asses to hell.
Do what most people do and buy the biggest 7-11 gulp slushy and put all kinds of disgusting crap in it and when you drive by a crowd of these Jonestown rejects, just throw it at them, aim for the face and laugh like looney who's on his way to hell.
Its quite funny, and make sure you record it so you can put it on Youtube and see your evilness get a high veiw rating.

Trust me, as you may find both god and satan would love you for that.

Oh, didn't you hear? According to lost Bible texts, Jacob's brother was a total fanboy who read Green Lantern, watched reruns of Battlestar Galactica, went to Comic-Con every year, and fantasized daily about Power Girl. At least, that's what  that Fred Phelps is saying. >:/

tbh God, or any god, shouldn't dictate what I choose to do or act,  I believe that selfless, moral people are always happier and the fanatics and the bullies will never be content in their lives, if being a 'nerd' has a negative influence on your life, then you should chose to change your ways, but not because of a God, but because of the people around you here and now

Amen brother. I agree with every single word you say and couldn't have said it better (actually I would have written the same if I had known of that earlier). Good job.

(As a little side note I should add that I am not "only", as if there was something simple about that, a faithful Christian but also study theology.)

@Chaos Burn: Sooo, you're saying what?  If you're going to change, make sure you're submitting to peer pressure to do so?  That's begging for trouble.  The beauty of God is that He gave us freedom to choose, including the choice to not believe in Him.  If that's where you're happy, more power to you.  I believe there are consequences for that decision, and that it is better to believe in Him than not to.  His existence does not require our belief though, and there will always be those who don't.  I'm not out to save everyone, but neither will I flinch in the face of others' doubt.

Hey, Jesus kicked a lot of ass. Haven't you heard of him clearing out the temple? He chased people around with a freaking whip.
