What Batman stories connect Year One and Dark knight Returns?

I'm hoping this works as this is my first list.

This is a thought that has been tickling the back of my head for a while. I know that continuity has be changed a number of times but I wanted to see if it was possible to list Batman stories, using Year One as, obviously, number 1 and ending with Dark Knight Returns. The criteria was simple, if a non-fan was to read them in order they would be able to follow them with as little trouble as possible.

Have a look and let me know what you think, ideas and contributions are more than welcome so that a definitive list may one day be created.

so lets start...

List items

  • The definitive starting point for the Dark Knight. More than a great Batman story, this is a great book.

  • Ed Brubaker introducing the clown prince of crime in an amazing story.

  • This has got to be my favourite Batman story. A moment in time when story and art worked together in perfect harmony.

  • A wonderfully "Gothic" turn for the Dark Knight from Grant Morrison. I love the scratchy style of art in this arc and how this taps into the young Bruce Wayne.

  • The great beard's contribution to the mythos. The Joker has never been more deadly or sick.

  • Whilst this is not the best Batman story, the on going ramifications of this story re-enforced Batman's guilt and his dedication to his cause. This pushed Batman's psychosis to the next level.

This also supports the inclusion of Under the Red Hood, another fun story on this list.

  • The breaking of the Bat, following on from "A death in the family", this takes Batman further into his darkness, allowing him to become all the stronger foe it.

  • There is so much to this story. Batman is never better than when even he isn't sure what is going on around him.

  • A surprise return and a very fun story.

  • Am I just jumping on the band wagon by including this story? Maybe, but I really do believe that this story will go down as one of the greats. Like The Long Halloween, this is a combination of great writing and art.

  • The end of the line? starting and ending with Frank.
