Miera Nova says:

"the problem with BET is that it says wrap it up and vote and get sex outta the music but all over the channel is sex and the only movies they show are gangster movies so i dont think most sophisticated black people take it seriously. not saying every black person that watches bet is not sophisticated but that what i see from a latino stand point."

Like I said, I think it's ambitious to have a network called "Black Entertainment" because you are bound to misrepresent in some form.

I am actually curious to know what the target demographic is for the station because White society has always had a predilection for Black culture...I wonder how cognizant the network is of the attraction and fetishism for all things seemingly "Black" to a White audience and how much they might pander to that (i.e. portraying Blackness as such a finely tuned and specific product)

I think that BET and MTV have quite a bit of an overlap as far as music goes (granted this taps into an even bigger conversation about Blackness and Commodification etc...)

Though I am not entirely a fan of BET because I think that it caters to a very small fraction of African Americans while purporting to represent an entire race, I think that alot of people, particularly White people, are quick to say "OMG REVERSE RACISM," which is just dumb.

Slinger is entirely correct in what he says when he points to a history of marginalization and erasure of nonWhites by a culture that boasts of being a "melting pot".

Only someone completely ignorant of White privilege and American history would assert that Blacks are racist for claiming one channel out of hundreds of Whitewashed channels where Blacks and other races are underrepresented (or poorly represented).

Just as there are people who complain about Black history month (aka the shortest month of the year), the argument just doesn't stand up.

Oh and Madonna is hagsville

pixelized says:

"Whats the big deal?
" />http://weblogs.newsday.com/entertainment/celebrities_blog/mileyvanity.jpg

I think it's actually really artistic what is disturbing is that the image I saw of this appeared to have her lipstick smeared a bit which I think is a bit too far (mostly because of her career as a kids star).

I think that in certain context this would be an image with merit--something to be discussed and really "read". But I think that her celebrity obscures an articulate reading of the image.

Is it racy? yes.

Is it appropriate? ...no.

Is it really a big deal?

Because she's Miley Cyrus and her sexuality is broadcasted worldwide and her identity becomes that of every 15 year old girl... I guess.

I think our culture is too lazy and too quick to jump to "OMG!? It's MILEY?!" when really I think that even as the subject of a photograph she is playing a role not necessarily of herself (plus, even at 15 I was developing a sexual identity. I think that you can see in the image a sort of Lolita-esque transition from young girl to young woman that is pivotal in adolescent change). You can't always assume the star/narrator is reflecting an image of themselves.
