Lots of Bang for Your Buck! 0

This was a book I was feeling lots of mixed emotions about before it released. I am not always the biggest fan of reboots, and I was concerned that this reboot was going to be more of the same from DC. Well, in order to avoid spoilers, and to just give the broad strokes here to keep anyone from reading things they don’t want to see- I can safely say- I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Not only was it a huge book for just $2.99 (which was something that I was very pleased with once DC...

Nothing Goes Over My Head... Except Everything Higher Than I Am Tall 0

You would imagine that a character like Drax, who takes things so literally all of the time wouldn’t have a book with so much talking in it, but for a book set in an outerspace version of classic Roman gladiatorial pits, there is an awful lot of jabbering. This book has a nice look to it, and the inclusion of Fin Fang Foom adds a bit of connective tissue to the Marvel Universe, because I don’t know how many people really know/care about Terrax, I for one didn’t really know anyt...

It's Like Animal Farm, Except Not... 0

I haven’t been as excited by this standalone Justice Leaguer’s book as I had hoped, but this issue really got me back interested, seeing Cyborg and Shazam working side-by-side. I think this book has a great handle on art, I just wish there was more to this book story-wise. I think that Victor has a lot of great, meaty emotional storylines to delve into, and it seems like this issue is starting to push the character back in the right direction. I hadn’t seen much of the humor in...

Spider/Barbarella on the Attack 0

This new Spider-Woman book was something that I wasn’t really aware of before the first issue. But when issue one came out, I thought that it would be fun to read and Jessica Drew seems like a character that is really interesting and unique. Plus, when you add in the fact that she is also currently pregnant (LIKE SUPER PREGNANT) it makes for a really intense story. This arc has gone a way that I definitely didn’t expect, and this issue serves as a nice final chapter to the first arc,...

I'll NOT Have What She's Having... 0

This book really is a weird, unique story. I loved last issue’s crazy twist on the story- and this issue just serves to further push that craziness even further. I love the art in this book, and Warren Ellis’ stellar writing is in full effect here. This is a weird book, and I am sure that it is a more polarizing title, because it centers on a group of people (some British) and the vague explanation of the living computer entity known as the Injection. We still don’t really know...

A Blast From the Past 0

This series has felt like something straight out of my third grade notebooks- it is the kind of team-up every kid who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s would salivate over; Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, teaming up to fight the Foot clan and the evil Shredder. Add on to that some way-cray Dimension-X level new universe “fish out of water” element, and you have yourself a story that is as timeless as the characters within it’s pages. This book has been reall ...

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read All About It! (Or at least SOME of it...) 0

There is a lot going on in this issue, there is a lot going on in this whole book for that matter, and it is just getting crazier the further we go down the rabbit hole. This book is written by Brian K. Vaughan, who is someone I wasn’t extremely familiar with when I started back reading comics a few years ago, but since then has become someone that, when they appear on a new book’s creative team, you DO NOT want to miss it. This book is no exception- you do NOT want to miss it.I love...

Ho Ho Oh No! 0

Klaus is a book that both intrigues and confuses me- it’s a Grant Morrison penned Santa Claus origin story, but somehow it ended up only just getting started before Christmas passed it by. So this issue and the four others to follow will be released in an increasingly more spring (and also summer)-time feeling world. Unless there is some sort of crazy El Nino stuff happening where we end up getting Christmas weather in May, I think this book may have missed it’s prime release schedu...

What a long, strange trip it's been... 0

This book was a strange and interesting trip to take for four issues, giving readers who are new to Gabriel Hernandez’ work (people like myself) an opportunity to dip a toe slightly into the deep waters of the creator of Love and Rockets, along with giving us some gorgeous artwork (as is the expectation) from Darwyn Cooke. The first issue of this series floored me, and made me certain I would not miss an issue. The first issue reminded me why Vertigo does what it does so well, and showed m...

Let Slip the Lesbian Dogs of War... 0

This book was one (of many) that I wasn’t fully committed to picking up when I walked into the shop on Wednesday. I have my set pull list, and a few other issues that I am usually on the fence about, but this was one that I just wasn’t 100% sold on. I have seen the ads in the back of other Image books, but I just didn’t really feel DRAWN to the book. That is, until I saw it on the shelf. I flipped through it, and decided then and there that I needed to read it; so I did.I know...

I Would Have Pushed the Red Button WAY Before Now... 0

This book has been a pretty consistent beacon of hope for me through the shakeups over ar DC comics, from the dismantling of the New 52, the rise (and almost immediate fall) of the DCYou. Grayson has been a fun, unique book that really took me by surprise. I actually read the first issue of this series when it came out, picking up the gorgeous Jock variant cover for the issue, but feeling completely and utterly lost in the first moments of the story. I fell behind in DC events, and never even go...

First Flight 0

Coming into this book with the writing changing hands away from Kelly Sue DeConnick was a big hurdle to overcome, but I think that the story changes enough to set itself apart from what has come before, and even goes quite a long way to bring some newly revamped characters from the Marvel Universe into the fore. I think that this book should appeal to a wide range of readers, and could (hopefully) be yet another notch in Marvel’s belt in the realm of books geared towards younger and female...

Have At Thee, False Mom! 0

I have said before how much I like Max Bemis, both as a writer and a musician, so it was no surprise that I was jumping on board this book. The main surprise was the actual release schedule for this book- that it would be rather unceremoniously released digitally in a five part digital series (apparently one issue a week) and once that digital run was completed the physical copies would be released (looking like a monthly release schedule, starting in February). But beyond that, I don’t ha...

Not So Silky-Smooth Feeling... 0

I had really liked the creation of Silk (aka Cindy Moon) in the Spider-Verse event, I like seeing Peter have a super-powered counterpart who isn’t always just time traveling Miguel O’Hara or dimensionally displaced Miles Morales (which I think it is official we are getting another Pete & Miles team-up book) plus seeing how a young woman who has been trapped in a bunker for a decade deals with life in New York relatively unsupervised is an interesting and (almost) unique premise- ...

With Fava Beans and a Nice Ham Sandwich... 0

This book has been a consistently weird, awkward, sometimes scary and spooky story that really hasn’t gone out of it’s way to reveal much of ANYTHING regarding it’s secrets in six issues. To say that Warren Ellis and company are playing this one “Close to the vest” is a grave understatement. We see a lot of the same stunning visuals in this issue, and we have even begun to see who (or what) is out there in opposition to our team. There is still a very unique spin on...

Best X-Man STORY Ever, Maybe... 1

So, I have to start off this review with a bit of capitulation, because for some reason (the reasons actually being that I am recovering from being sick, and had suffered a minor injury to my back taking down all the Christmas decorations in my house, so my focus was not as laser-sharp as it usually is…) I completely forgot to discuss this book on the podcast this week, and even though I meant to do it for my Other Side segment for the Weird Science DC Comics Podcast, I went with Spider-M...

How I Met (Definitely Not) Your Mother... 0

This was a book that I was very unsure of after the first two issues. It could have either gone way up or way down in overall quality; because there just wasn’t a lot of story to go off of early on. But with the third issue things got a little clearer, and we actually get to see some of the members of the 140 interacting, and the end of the issue we get the big reveal as to what our “benevolent” dying billionaire has in store for the 140 (which after last issue is the 139, but ...

Paper Girls: Public Enemy Number One 0

I picked up this book from issue one, but didn’t really understand what I was getting myself into when I did. I actually let it slide towards the bottom of my “to read” pile that first week, until I saw a tweet from my Comedic Spirit Animal, Patton Oswalt, extoling the virtues of this book is his own way (see: being blunt and simultaneously vulgar and informative). After that first issue, I was hooked- the story is totally unlike anything else out there, the artwork is gorgeous...

God Save the Queen of Punk 0

I had no idea what I was getting myself into with Last Gang In Town- I though the cover looked cool, and with the string of successes that Vertigo has had with new number ones lately, I thought I should just give it a try regardless. The cover makes this book out to be a much more darker and straightforward street-tough story than it actually is; not that it necessarily is a bad thing that the book itself took a different direction than what I was expecting, but more on that later…This bo...

Now, I am a relative newcomer to the Guardians of the Galaxy, so I don’t know if a lot of these concepts have been touched on before (see: reboot) or if this time in Peter Quill’s life is wholly unexplored territory. I was one (of many, I am sure) who got into the Guardians book prior to the movie’s release when the series got rebooted in one of the waves of All-New Now! Marvel’s Ultimate Now-ier Now! with the point-one issue.I have said before, I am a sucker for a good v...

Wide Awake, and Smiling... 0

So I will try my darnedest to not spoil anything for the film- I know some people haven’t seen it yet and wont see it for a while. I got lucky, and had my in-laws step up and offer to watch the kid so my wife and I could enjoy Force Awakens in IMAX 3D. Then, the next day I got the opportunity through my wife’s work to get discounted group tickets for another showing of the film, so we took my three year old to the movie. I wanted to take him to see it, because he (of course, as my so...

I Lava You, You Lava Me... 0

I have expressed my dissatisfaction with the Darth Vader series before, not actually pertaining to anything wrong with the book, just that it included some “new” characters that were of such “significant” value to comic book prospectors and scalpers, that I was unable to pick up a copy from my local shop. Which was fine, because there were and are still more than enough Star Wars books being put out to satisfy my needs. But with the Force Awakens opening, I decided that ...

Donnie Clarko; or "How I Learned to Take a Gunshot to the Face" 0

I have been a fan of Max Landis’ for quite some time, I enjoyed his cinematic work, along with his Internet videos he has made (The Death and Return of Superman and his story on wrestling are great to watch- I highly recommend them) and his comic work has been interesting to read. I liked his Adventures of Superman story where Supes meets The Joker for the first time, and deals with him handily, and we see The Clown Prince of Crime phase through all his different incarnations, only to have...

I haven’t written up a Batman & Robin Eternal issue before this one, but I HAVE been reading them, and I just feel like I need to talk through this a little bit, maybe that will help make more sense of things… This book has varied greatly in quality from issue to issue, and I am not really sure yet if this book is great or just mediocre. We open the issue with Jason and Tim confronted by Azrael, who is a welcome sight for me- I love Azrael, and I think that his appearance in this...

(Southern) Cross-ing Over... 0

Southern Cross is a book that has taken me by surprise from the first issue. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I picked up the first issue, I just knew that I liked the cover art, and I liked the creative team on the book. I didn’t realize the depth that the story would have, or how detailed the artwork would be. I didn’t expect this book to be a murder mystery set in space, which takes a hard right turn into some inter-dimensional travel sci-fi epic. I think that if I...

The Re-Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Strikes Again... Again 1

Squirrel Girl gets a new number one… again??? A character that I didn’t even know existed basically eighteen months ago is now the most popular girl in school- and with people like Erica Henderson and Ryan North at the helm of this girl, there is nothing standing in the way of her going on to become the Marvel Universe prom queen (that’s a thing, right? If not, it probably really should be. Just don’t let Deadpool be king- that’s a whole mess of problems that NOBOD...

A 'Stroke of Luck... 0

Deathstroke has been a book that has gone on a pretty wild ride in it’s first ten issues. We saw Slade Wilson de-aged (or made young again- however you want to say it) and then got to see the Terminator go toe-to-toe (more or less) with a God. Things got messy there, and Slade came away a little more grizzled than I was expecting. The story has taken a decidedly more street level approach with this issue (and the arc as a whole, im guessing) where Deathstroke goes on a quest to rescue his ...

This is the time of year to jump in with both feet to all things horror, its getting close to all hallows eve, and the witching hour is nigh- is that enough Halloween clichés for now? it is- ok good! But this book is something that is unique and strange, and will make your skin crawl in the best possible way.The cover for this book, while not by the interior artist, does a great job at capturing the off-putting nature of this story, and really evokes a low groan out of you if you look at...

Fluff and Stuff (where "fluff" is actually a dirty word) 0

Now, this was a book I was really looking forward to this week- it was such a strange idea for a book, and done by a creator who I really enjoy, so I knew I would be giving this book a shot. I was really not sure what to expect from this book, being the first issue of a creator owned series, you don’t always have to see a backstory heavy info dump right off the bat, and this book doesn’t really spend too much time explaining how things came to be (actually, it really only gives you t...

ARRRWWRRRRRGGGHHHHHHHH! (Or "How Chewie Got His Groove Back") 0

Again, I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into this book- I love Star Wars, and I have been enjoying the Star Wars comics Marvel has been putting out (those that I am still reading- after the debacle with Darth Vader and it’s forced rarity with some random droid and new character, I gave up) and I am glad to see more limited series stories being published than ongoing, because I have a feeling that the ongoing series cant really sustain too many more Star Wars books, because as of t...

The Adventures of Lois & Clark (but not THAT Lois & Clark) 0

At first glance, I wasn’t sure what to make of this book. A new Superman book? But a Superman and Lois Lane book? But it is actually spun out of Convergence? It just seemed like yet another lackluster attempt at DC to just throw something out and hook people into reading something “new and different” but that was basically the same as everything else that came before it… But this book actually takes a different tact from the word “go!”. It really feels like s...

The Scales of Libra are Tipping in Their Favor... 0

I was very unsure what to make of this series when I saw it solicited. I thought it was a Jem and the Holograms-meets-Batgirl of Burnside mash up, but I didn’t think that I would be getting the kind of book that I did. In a world that now is moving beyond “Batgirl-ing” it’s books, a title like this shows that, if it is done with the right intentions, and with your heart in the right place, you can accomplish “Batgirl-ing” a book (that is a new book, that isn&r...

How to Get Away with Murder...ing a God 0

This book has been all over the place for the length of the Godkiller arc, from high to low and back again, things haven’t been very consistent in a book that NEEDS consistency. I mean, Deathstroke has already been cancelled once in this current DC continuity- does it really need a second? But with this arc ending, and the larger-than-life finale, I think things could be moving in the right direction, as long as the creative team has the foresight (hah! Eye jokes for a character famous for ...

Secret Wars has started to unravel a bit, with all the news of the event slowing down, delays coming out more often, things aren’t looking too smooth over at Marvel HQ, but this isn’t the main series Secret Wars, this is Battleworld- so who knows what is going to happen here??? Black Canary was one of a grand total of FOUR DC Comics books that I read this week, which is a pretty high benchmark for me as of late- I haven’t been reading much DC, and definitely not consistently. I thought that the first few issues of Black Canary were interesting, and that I was unaware of the connective tissue between Black Canary and the Batgirl of Burnside books. But after reading issue one I read the Burnside trade, and after all that reading the Black Canary book started to fee...

So it all comes down to this… This story has been building to the clash of Regent and Spider-Man and his band of rebels, but with nary a mention of Doom or Battleworld at all. So-things jump right in with this issue, we see that Hawkeye is confronting Regent, and Annie and MJ are trying to find Spider-Man. Things are not going well for ANYONE up to this point, but since this is the last issue for the Renew Your Vows arc, we can guess up front that things will end up going okay for SOMEONE...

I have really been enjoying the Swords of Sorrow series, even if some of the tie-in books seem to be a bit “off the rails” when it comes to the main story continuity. This book has a bit of that problem, but only because (as is the case with most big event book tie-ins, and the issues with release schedules) this book is coming out after the main series has already had the main characters in the story rejoin their group. So, like the story at Marvel with Lando getting into trouble wi...

I really have been pleasantly surprised by the Book of Death event- the main title has been paced well, and there has been a big enough threat in that story to keep me interested. The “Fall of …” titles were ones I was less certain of, because with The Valiant, I hadn’t really delved into any of the tie-in books, but still enjoyed the main series enough for what it was. But after I read The Fall of Bloodshot issue, and the emotional story that issue told, I figured that ...
