Cyclops New Secret Base

As much as I applaud one of the X-writers for finally realizing that a secret base is actually a good idea, how long do you give them before the secret is blown, and the base blown up. Marvel has blown up the X-Mansion who knows how many times, so I'm just assuming it's a given.

I also really want to see it explained how this was built in the first place, lots of questions on that one with the events of the last decade in the X-verse.

@Brazen_Intellect: I thought Magik and Magneto built it out of the old Weapon X installation.

so, does that mean they live in Canada now?

Same here!

I love the fact that Cyclops turned an old Weapon X installation into a school. I think it's the perfect F U to Wolverine for naming his school after Scott's dead wife. If I could pick which school gets blown up first It so would be the Jean Grey school for the gifted or what I like to call the Comic Book Limbo of the New X-Men......

That explanation has a lot of holes in it for me.

1 - Magneto's powers are crippled, in his state building this place would seem to take a while, even if I accepted he had all the expertise to do it alone.

2 - I'm not buying that an abandoned Weapon X installation has all the raw materials needed, especially for a Danger Room. Magik may be able to teleport such things there, but from where?

3 - When was all this done?

If someone blew up the Jean Grey School and took that terrible title along with it, I would not shed a single tear, but that is besides the point.

1- Magneto has built lots of bases by himself, that volcano base in the Savage Land, Asteroid M (at least twice), all kinds of secret islands (my favourite of which was in the Bermuda Triangle), and he's also supposed to be a genius at robotics, and he's not doing it alone. Cyclops probably also knows how a Cerebro or a Danger Room works, and Magic has access to a whole dimension of demons or whatever that would do her bidding.

2- from anywhere, probably. Cyclops and Magneto should know what they need, having both done this before.

3- In the first arc of All New X-men.

Yup. This makes sense. Add to the fact that Magik can now access more of her magical powers from Limbo. So she might be able to manipulate matter on earth as well.

The actual page in All New X-men has Magneto hoisting a metal panel in the air while you have Magik while levitating or flying fusing parts together with some type of energy blast.

The last time we saw Danger, she was with Magik and Erik when they decided to break Cyke out of jail. So, if she's still with them, and even if it wasn't show on the issue, I'm guessing she would be a HUGE help while building all that stuff, and she could, you know, work as the Danger Room herself...

I prefer this school over the JGSoHL simply because it's a school... under... the effing... ground.

Yes, they are in Canada. Will Bendis acknowledge that, who knows? Weapon X might suddenly be located in Alaska. (Did I mention Bendis?) So its location being an issue due to which country its in has yet to be seen/revealed/acknowledged.

Weapon X was an ugly, horrific place -- a place where mutants suffered terribly. At the very least, it holds just as much abhorrence for some as it does to others when it comes to the Jean Grey Institute.

As for it having the technology -- sure, why not? Magik can do many things apparently and Magneto despite his power being somewhat compromised is capable of creating anything he likes to (as is what other posters have mentioned before).

I am neither here nor there -- not impressed but not too put out. Scott is right -- it would be the last place someone would think to look for them. (Wolverine. Wolverine, Wolverine.)

@lykopis: Why would anyone apart from Cyclops himself abhor the Jean Grey institute ?

IMHO even if Cyclops does abhor it, it's only him that has the personal reason to.

But yeah, I think naming the institute the JGS was meant as a slap in the face of Scott, by Logan. So it's just fitting that Cyclops should give Logan his own FU.

Actually Cyclops needs to dish out a whole lot of FUs, preferably starting with Beast...

Posted by Avenger85

Also, what seems a bit strange is, as Magneto is now the traitor, why didn't he just reveal the base's location in his very first meeting with SHIELD ? He could have just done that, got himself a "get-out-of-jail" card for free, and then gone about his own business.

There really is more to this betrayal than meets the eye. Either he's a double agent working for Cyclops, or it's the return of the good ol' Magneto that we all loved to hate back in the day.

It's not just the name of the new Institute that makes some mutants unhappy -- it's the location, the building, the academy itself which holds bad memories -- not just for the older X-Men, for the recent graduates and students as well. Many have lost dear friends who attended the previous Xavier Institute, let alone its history of being attacked repeatedly.

Difference of opinions aside on the naming of the old academy, I don't think Cyclops named his school Xavier's as a slap in the face of Wolverine. I am of the mind Scott is genuine in wanting to keep his former mentor's dream alive -- he has indicated as much. Since it's a secret, does it much matter what the name of it is called? Outside of him revealing the name to those who stand with him, the rest of the world publicly doesn't. I suspect this will change in the near future.

Something is off about this whole Magneto/traitor business -- I agree.

No worries -- it was a pretty sad time in the Marvel Universe.

The layout display was a nice touch. Would love to see other superhero joints clearly like that. The 'off-limits' stuffed in the corner was an intriguing point.

Being secret-er I'd expect it to last more time than any of the old schools. Possibly until they reunite.

yeah, being more of a secret does give it more of a fighting chance, I guess.

I love layout displays of this sort anyway, they used to do them all the time in books like Avengers and Fantastic Four, but I especially liked how they incorporated it into the panels of the story. A surprising economy of style from someone as theatrical as Bachalo.

Yes I am pretty curious about that Off limits stuff there. I wonder if its a Limbo dungeon..lol or Magneto's secret lair or something...

yeah i dont get the whole magneto breaking scott out of jail to get him killed thing either,,,,i think magneto wants to make scott look bad so magneto would take over as leader and scott will be second-in-command

IF you accept that he has the expertice? This guy created Utopia, Avalan, several bases, reprogrammed Doombots, a lot of Genosha's infrastructure and all kinds of crap all by himself. A tiny little school he could build sleeping.
